Dateline: San Francisco, CA
Place: Cheap motel by the beach. I chose this place because 1. it's cheap, 2. it's a stone's throw from Ocean Beach, 3. there's free parking.
Having survived my rebooked plane ride through the Twin Cities to San Francisco, I settled into my cheap motel room by the sea, thinking that San Francisco must have wireless.
Why would I think this? San Francisco is modern! San Francisco is trendy! San Francisco is liberally minded!
Imagine my great surprise when I learn that San Francisco is a place not yet wireless connected! WTF, I think. Even Royal Oak is wirelessly connected. Colorado Springs is wirelessly connected. The Twin Cities are wirelessly connected. These places are not as trendy as San Francisco!
My cheap motel room does not provide free wireless connection. (It's cheap. I don't even get complimentary coffee!) I would have had to book a room at Fisherman's Wharf, where it's busy with tourists, expensive, and the parking is NOT free.
This morning a leading news story on Channel 4 had to do with why San Francisco is not wireless yet.
*thud*
That is the sound of my head hitting the table.
Postscript: I'm online at the Conservatory. For now.

Sorry about the fog. It's summer - be much nicer the next four days. Remember, whatever climate you want in the Bay Area is only a 15 minute drive away.
Enjoy your stay.
Even better (view-wise) is the Sea Breeze Motel in Pacifica, south of San Francisco just off the Pacific Coast Highway. Kind of cheesy motel but the surroundings can't be beat. Not a far drive to a park-and-ride for transport into the city. Definitely no wireless or anything other amenities other than the fantastic location.
The worst is when you specifically ask about internet service at a hotel and they tell you they've got it but they don't. Dave's had to locate nearby coffee shops and camp out in front of them early in the morning to try and feed of their wireless when he has to monitor updates and releases over the weekend.
Last month, while in Los Angeles (Glendale to be exact) I sat in the parking lot of Whole Foods and got online via their free community wi-fi network. Free parking, 2 hour limit. Not ideal, but it worked.
Yes, Janna, I am at the Oceanview! Cheap rooms, close to the beach, and the coffee next door at the Java Beach is organic and tasty!
Madame Donna, I had things to post (not necessarily here!) regarding the dinner I had at a faboo restaurant last night. I guess it'll wait until I get home.
We have free wireless in Royal Oak (Oakland County will be completely wireless in another year). Yes, free, as in NO charge!
