Do you have a Best Friend?

Remember when we were in grade school we "had" to have a best friend. Mine was Beth.. Remember BF4Ever? Alas when Beth and I went off to college our friendship faded away, however when my mother died Beth was at the funeral.

During college my best friend was Patti. Patti has CF and I saw her through a broken engagement, she saw me through a failed marriage and we are still friends. However our friendship is not as strong as it used to be although I wish it were. Perhaps we don't have as much in common, perhaps the friendship has run its course, but Patti is still very, very dear to me.

I would say I now have 4 "best" friends. These are friends I can rely on. Karla is my "worker" friend. She is a working mom as I, has a very high pressure job and she and I share many career interests. Lesley is my "mother" friend. She is a busy mom of 3 and we share our children's hopes and dreams. Jill and Cathy are my nearby friends and I know if I need either all I have to do is call and they will be there for me.

Its funny how friends come and go in our lives, yet hopefully we all have one who would be there for us, should we need them. Mine is Cheryl, my pal from 3rd grade. We rarely see each other, due to both distance and busy lives, but each knows, if there were an emergency, the other would drop everything to be there. Like she did when my hubby died, and I did when her Mom, then brother did.

My best friend in elementary school was Caroline. We grew up only 3 floors apart in the same apartment building. When we reached middle school, we found different groups of friends. My best friends ever since have been Amy, Pia, and Nicole (who is slowly fading due to different lifestyles).
