My Dad recently invited me over for some good ole' squirell stew, and boy oh boy was it good! Nothin like some good ole' squirell with taters, tamaters and okry all cooked in together. You cain't beat them eats anywhere.
However when I was telling my co-workers about that good ole'e squirell stew that my Dad made, half of them became squeemish and one girl actually got sick to her stomach.
OK, this is Kentucky for goodness sakes. People here actually eat alot worse on a daily basis, so what's the big deal about eating squirell? So I must ask ya'll Gatherers, would ya'll eat squirell?

How about some good ole' fried rabbit? These critters also make some pretty good stew.
We eat these all the time here in Kentucky, so would you?

Yep...you've got it. The ole' groundhog. When I was growing up back in the 1970's, these critters were all over the place. Four of these fellers could wipe out a few acres of soya beans in no time. Considering that I had to defend the family farm at all costs, several of these critters met their fate from the muzzle of of my AR-15.
This critter is widely consumed across the Bluegrass State. I've never actually considered eating one of these critters, however I wouldn't rule it out.
So Gatherers....would you eat one of these critters?

OK....this is where I draw the line. The ole' possum is considered to be some purtty good eaten' by most of my Kentucky bretheren, however when I saw one of these fellers crawl out of a dead cow back on the ole' farm, that did it for me. No possum on the plate for me. No fried possum, no grilled possum, no baked possum and no possum stew.
However Gatherers..would you?

Tried bunny, hate it. Tried squirrel and hated it too. Don't think I could stomach a possum or a groundhog. Maybe. Ewww, I know these don't taste like chicken. So, while there is still chicken available, that's what I'll be chowing down on. lol
Ann..don't blame ya.
Can't say that there is much difference in them critters and all'em creepy crawlies them folks down Cousin Todd's way eats. Fer that matter, ain't much differnt'n eatin them amedilla things down there in Texas, em ain't much more'n big ol rats in shells.
Lyndon..LOL!
As fer the squirrels, Honey I got the fattest squireels in the city cause I feed them twice a day. Fresh unsalted peanuts in the shell, Dried corn on the cob, black sunflowers seeds and popcorn. I got one named petey and he will just about eat from my hand. I Love my squirrels but not on my plate.
Possum, How many ways can we say YUCK!!! Dad gum rats is what they are and they don't play dead if you scare em. I had one in my trash can about a month ago. I went out, the motion detector came on and the ugly rat snarled and hissed at me. I would however love to shoot one.
Ground Hog, I actually knew someone in ohio that cooked one of them boggers. For me, I think I'll stick with chicken.
Rabbit (peter Cottontail) Now how could I even think about eating one of them purrty things, who'd bring me chocolate on easter? No rabbit stew for me.
I also say no to Bambi on the plate, kermit, goat and catfish. Though catfish only cause I don't like it. Too Fishy!!!
Rabbit? Fo' Sho'!! Nix on the rest.
And look out! I'm a comin' a squirell huntin' at yourn house! LOL
Now Possum jerky is actually good on long trails to eat.
strange creatures....I've tasted possum, but
didn't care for it.
Ron..Been there..done that and I haven't learned my lessons yet! That squirell stew was mighty tastey!
Susan....how did that possum taste? Please do tell!
Robiyah...I'll take some good ole' rabbit over wild berries anyday!
My mama used to tell stories of eatin possum, she said they cooked it in sweet taters to absorb the greese and she used to crave possum and sweet taters. Yuck!!! But in those days I didn't know the difference between a possum and a pole cat.
Squirrel - yes
Possum - has tried it, but he didn't really like it
Rabbit - yes
Frog Legs - You missed this one, too - yes
Crawdads - yes
Whew...
Now, I wouldn't PREFER to eat any of these odd things...I tend to choose vegetables and grains.
Truth be told, if you HAD to eat any of these otherwise unappetizing creatures... to survive..you would. Let's face it.
Those are all brothers to rats !
Crawfish? Tried it and it didn't do anything for me.
Mountain oysters? Oh my goodness no!
Lyndon..prairie oysters? Yeah..What are you talking about there Denise?
I think I will write the story of my snipe hunting exprience, ya'll will do anything to a yankee for laughs.
Sad thing is that it seems that the pesticides used by the massive farms have killed off alot of the bullfrogs.
Rabbit stew, rabbit pot pie, and fried rabbit .... yummy
Squirrel stew, squirrel pot pie, and pan-fried squirrel ..... yummy
Ground Hog .... delicious if it is cooked right ... the younger ones are always better b/c the old ones are very tough ........ parboil with onions and vinegar ..... then dredge in flour, salt & pepper .... and pan fry until golden brown ..... TASTY
Possum .... I have had possum pot pie ..... don't recommend possum unless you are near starving [we were, at the time] .... it has a "sweet" taste to the meat that I found unpleasant ..... but it was better than eating nothing
Rattlesnake .... a tad oily, but definitely yummy ....
Shark .... lovely texture and flavor [we slow-cooked it on the grill w/ mesquite]
Venison ..... deeeeeeeeeee-lish ..... prefer it pan-fried, but baked, broiled, stewed, or in a pot pie is just as good ..... and it's low fat with NO cholesterol, to boot .....
Guess that is enough for now ...... love the wild game birds, too .... pheasant, turkey, quail ..... as well as the domestic chickens, of course ..... very good eating .... pity I haven't been hunting in the last 25 years or so ......
PS: Never, never, never try racoon ....... even if you are near to starving to death .... the risk of rabies from this critter is waaaaay too great ..... off limits to me and mine for a LONG time ....... Bear, on the other hand is just plain STRONG and kind of nasty ...... but if we killed it ... we ate it ........ that was the rule in our house ..... so we got to be good shots and only hunted for the best tasting critters in season ..... Moose and Elk are wonderful, however ..... great taste and texture .... yummy .....
I really have to go ..... I just keep on writing and writing and writing .... and remembering . . . . . . . . . .
I must admit that I do Hate frog legs and I have never tried groundhogs. But deer meat, squirell and quail are the best.
Lyndon.....I did my frog giggin' back in the 70's when I was a teenager. Nowadays, there ain't no frogs to be had.
As for frog legs ..... any more, about the only way we can get THEM today is from the specialty shops ...... they come frozen and pricey ....... we have cooked them up and added chicken-wing drums to the mix and the kids swear they taste a lot alike ... pan-fried, of course .... lol .....
I am sure there are many, many more menu items that I could go on about .... but I will leave them for others to write about ........ this is a good, yummy thread .... thanks for asking us about this .....
I used to have a great recipe for Possum Pizza. First you find a well-ironed Possum, then....
Bill ....Perhaps you can share the Possum Pizza recipie with the rest of us?
