Most of you are aware of the gruesome murders here in CT that have made headlines for every major news medium in the country. I am not about to reiterate the details of these heinous acts. Google in Cheshire and CT murders, or any reasonable permutation thereof, and you will find blogs and articles galore if you haven't already viewed the story on CNN or Fox news.
What I wish to point out and have documented here is the fact that these horrendous acts of assault were not perpetrated with firearms. Although it was reported that the assailants had beebee guns, they were not used in the murders.
Violent crimes are committed by violent people. It doesn't matter if they have guns or not. If you read any of the latest blogs on home safety that were inspired by this incident, homeowners are encouraged to have guns for protection. Perhaps if this Cheshire, CT family had been armed they would be here today.

Your comment reveals you are not familiar with the story, but merely wished to give your knee jerk response to your stand on gun control. Your statement shows no thought process at all, just an accusation of faulty logic on my part and your opinion which you have backed up with ZILCH!
In the old days a crazy guy might get a knife and only a few people would get stabbed before he was taken down. Now crazy people get guns that do so much damage before anybody has a chance to blink.
And then there's urban gang people who have such easy access to guns it's almost like the system is set up for them.
So many gun deaths are kids in the home of the owner, their parent. Guns in the home can be a very bad idea. Homes can be very volitile environments, depending on the home.
We need to control guns like we control the other things that kill people. A LOT of people in the U.S. are killed and wounded from guns, accidents and on purpose.
I guess a conversation with Juan might go something like,
"Gee, Juan, nice day today isn't it?" his wife asks. Juan answers, "Well that monsoon they had in Oshkosh last week scared the hell out of me."
Elizabeth, that is pure speculation backed up by nothing. If I were that man and all my family had been murdered, I'd probably want to be dead anyway. The poor guy is practically comatose from their beating.
When people learn that it's the criminal and not the weapon that is the danger to them, only then will we begin to address the right issues that will reduce incidences of crime.
No bombs yet going off, here, even with internet recipes.
I like the movie Bowling For Columbine. It really didn't have any answers but it just raised lots of interesting questions. Why do we shoot each other so much in the U.S.? Canadians have a lot more guns, their urban areas are denser, and they just don't have the gun problem we do - and there is no answer anybody can figure out.
I bet if I had a snappy light weight little modern gun that let me shoot off five bullets in one second I'd have had a better chance, ha ha.
Guns are very dangerous. They SHOOT!
Please share the statistics on "carry" states....The "carry" state that I live near, Virginia, has a lot more crime than Maryland does.
We're not talking about giving guns to some crazy people to go on a killing spree. We're talking about letting good law abiding citizens have the right to protect themselves and their families in an ever increasingly dangerous society. What do you possibly have against that?
If you libs would do more than listen to NPR you might have heard the stories about people who have saved themselves and their families by using a gun to shoot an intruder or at least scare one away. You'd be surprised at what just firing off a warning shot can do. Crime rates have gone down in right to carry states and more states are passing the law. Those states that have a right to carry law haven't become like the wild west either.
If a worse case scenario happens you libs can go ahead and try to reason with the criminals and I hope that works out for you. But I'd bet that just about every victim who has been kidnapped, raped, tortured and murdered begged for their lives and it got them nowhere.
So, go ahead and chit chat with your assailants but stop trying to take my right to own a firearm away from me! Someday your butt might be saved by someone who carries a gun.
One intruder was killed, one is in critical condition in a local hospital, one is in custody, and one is at large and believed to be wounded.
The homeowner, and his wife and two small children were unharmed.
Oh, this is in Dallas, by the way - not terribly far from where I live.
I rest my case.
"Why do we shoot each other so much in the U.S.? Canadians have a lot more guns..."
I don't know if you realize it, but you answered your own question.
An armed citizenry is the best deterrent against crime.
We don't know if the Doctor was or wasn't a gun owner. I don't know if he had a gun if it would have made a difference. No one who is going about their normal lives expects to be pearl harbored by a couple of thugs and have their lives destroyed.
I believe in law abiding citizen's right to bear arms.
I would suggest though that if this family had a few ominous looking dogs on the premises, these cowards would have thought twice about invading this home.
Even more odd that having been asked you still haven't posted your NRA source for this information.
"Violent crimes are committed by violent people. It doesn't matter if they have guns or not."
Maybe not to you Sue . . . I'd rather not have violent people around me armed with firearms.
You need to license and register a car but to suggest you do it to a deadly weapon makes many claim that you want to allow only criminals to have guns . . . since they will, by definition, violate the law. It's a specious argument at best . . . if you make donuts illegal, only criminals will have donuts too. The 2nd Ammendment gives the right to keep and bear arms due to the need of a well regulated militia. So it can be regulated . . . and if you don't want to jump through the registration or licensing process that might be required or perhaps training on or off a range . . . then too bad. That's not the same as trying to "take your weapons".
By the way . . . should it be legal to keep and bear armor piercing bullets? Isn't that something you'd need to protect yourself from the military? How about surface to air missiles? Should we have the right to have at our disposal any weapon the military has since the 2nd Ammendment to give us the weapons is for our last line of defense in a well regulated militia . . . and that means after the military has failed us. Just curious . . . not smart-alecky . . . but where CAN you draw the line?

In Australia the total homicide rate, after having remained basically flat from 1995 to 2001, has now begun climbing again. Hmmm....wonder why?
Over the past six years, the overall rate of violent crime in Australia has been on the rise – for example, armed robberies have jumped 166 percent nationwide.
The sweeping legislation, of 1997, that took so many guns off the streets in Australia, and cost the taxpayers some $500 million, sure looks like a good investment to me.
Perhaps you can still book a discount fare on Quantas? Maybe go check things out for yourself?
Me, I'm going to stay here in the U.S. where there has been a steady decrease in the rate of violent crimes.
Messirs Smith and Wesson will be staying with me, too.
Nope. Read your Dr. Seuss comments with no trouble so your sarcasm is uncalled for. I see you still haven't posted your sources. My mind is made up of facts as I'm a truth seeker . . . you have provided . . . . ummmmm . . . let's count . . . oh yeah! ZERO facts. You made a statement . . . a source was asked for . . . it's still missing. What a shocker. Luckily Evie posts citations for her assertions. Perhaps you'd care to dispute those facts.
I see my questions are ALL unanswered. Maybe YOU should be reading. What a shocker.

Your stats are outdated. Read the WHOLE article, as I did.
I had actually read this before, but didn't cite it as the information only ran through 2000.
The info I posted was from a study done in 2003 by Gary Mauser of The Fraiser Institute.
If you have information more current than that, please post it.
My questions aren't pontificating so much as they are extrapolating. Where, in fact, DO you draw the line? I'm curious where and why . . .
Agreed the right is to protect us from the government as well . . . but how does a Smith & Wesson protect you from a tank or bunker buster bomb? Aren't we outgunned in that regard?

The question that y'all need to ask yourself in the Cheshire incident, is would you want to meet those two sociopaths empty handed, or with a large caliber handgun? If you were the husband, would you want to defend your family with empty hands, or a shotgun?
Mr. Lott, What.......
Mr. Lott, what
makes you think
that "guns" need your
protective ink?
Why glorify,
with intellect,
a piece of steel
without affect?
Don't you know that fragile breath
conceives, creates,
while "guns" yield death?
Use your capa-
cious legal mind;
Defend not "guns,"
but humankind.
And then, when all
is said and done,
fear will have lost,
true courage won.
