I finally got tired of waiting to see what the "mystery plant" was, especially since the fruit hasn't seemed to be growing much in the past couple of weeks. So I picked one and cut it open to find what I think looks like a very immature watermelon. It smells sweet like watermelon too, but it sure as heck doesn't taste like it! (Yes, fool that I am decided to give it a lick...lol.) It is very bitter at this point, but I believe that is because it isn't anywhere near ready for eating yet. I'm still not sure why the leaves don't look like those on "typical" watermelon plants, at least the pictures of them I've seen online, but I'm fairly confident that it is watermelon. Hopefully it will continue to grow and we'll at least get one or two ripe watermelons to enjoy in the Fall!

I have never seen this one before, biut regularly run into new melons so who's to say.
Squash & pumpkins, melons, watermelons, and cucumbers are all closely related (not close enough to cross pollinate between species) and I think they taste and smell quite similar to each other when immature which might explain the melon-like odor. That should change as they grow and ripen.
