TODAY'S TALKER: Judge John Roberts Says...

    That's what he told President Bush yesterday. According to the White House, Chief Justice Roberts said he was doing fine after having a seizure at his Maine vacation home at about 2p.m. on Monday.

    Doctors who examined Roberts after the seizure say he showed no signs of a tumor, stroke or any other illness. Roberts, who is 52, apparently had a similar attack back in 1993. Back then doctors similarly couldn't find a cause.

    The seizure caused the Chief Justice to fall on a dock where he sustained minor cuts and bruises. He was taken to the Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport where he was kept overnight for observation. Hospital officials are no longer commenting about the incident, and it was not clear if Roberts had already been released from the hospital.

    Medical experts say that someone who has had more than one seizure without a determining cause would be diagnosed with epilepsy. Whether or not Roberts will need medication is something his doctor will determine, and something he may want to keep private.

So what if he has epilepsy?

Why should he share his health report with the public? Even if he suffers from a form of epilepsy, at this point there is no reason to believe that it would interfere with his ability to perform his duties of Chief Justice any more than a Chief Justice was who temporarily incapacitated due to bouts with severe chronic bronchitis.

We Americans want our politicos and justices to be strong and healthy and free from human impediments. They're not, and most typically do their jobs well in spite of that. I don't feel the need to know about the health or other personal issues of these folks.

It would be different if it was a mentally debilitating condition. We are talking about 12 years between seizures, it is not like they are happening every other day. I may not share a lot of his views but I do not think this should affect standing as the Chief Justice and he should only make public as much of his health record as he is legally required to and anything beyond that at his own discretion.
