When it Rains it Pours

I feel your pain. I was off work for 6 months last year due to two injuries I received from Hurricane Wilma. I had to have surgery to repair both of them and only recieved a portion of my income for those six months. I am still playing catch up on my bills and it is killing me. Bill collectors do not care about your problems either, they just want their money.

The only thing I can suggest is to keep trying. You will get a job and most people end up better off financially and or emotionally in the long run from the job they had. Your husband may want to start looking also, a cut back is usually a prelude to a lay off.

I went through a lay off about 4 years ago and had three jobs since and two offers that I rejected. Each job paid more moey and had more responsibility.

diana, SELL AND MOVE OUT OF FLORIDA. I am not talking about kidneys, I am talking about homes and real estate. Move. I suspect you like Florida so think about Eastern Georgia or Southern Alabama. Austin Texas is a growing spot, If you want to "dry out" try Amarillo. If you want flatland, and long to experience winter, Iowa is a great state. Des Moines and points east are my recommendations. With ethanol development, I think the corn belt is poised for a lot of growth.
I would do some research, on line, at the BLS website. You can track demand for almost any skill set state by state. Florida is infamous for lower than average wages, as are Georgia, Alabama, and Texas. You may even be able to improve your future outlook within Florida, there are regional differences in every state.

But regardless, don't sit still. If you have a big car payment, sell the car, buy something used for cash. Could you benefit from a junior college course in medical billing? Sign up, Look for grants, scholarships and loans that will pay for school and living expenses.

When I was in a similar position a few years ago, I signed up with a temp company and not only did it help right away with the finances, but it eventually led to a great full time, permanent job. Also, that's when I started a limited service house sitting business. All I do is water plants, feed birds, fish or cats, take in the mail, and do a quick run-thru to ensure everything is OK. For this, I get $5 per house, per day and at this time of the year, I usually have between 12-20 houses a week. Since it only takes 5-7 minutes per location, it's great money for little effort. The downside is Spring & Fall and most of the Winter is slow, and you're busy over the holiday, but again, it takes little time and effort. Good luck with the work situation - I've been there and I know the constant stress it causes.

I feel your pain as well. Jacksonville has a lot of jobs with large companies, (insurance companies, southern bell, CSX, you name it). The traffic is not fun, but there are always jobs, and it's not too far up the road.
Remember, everything happens for a reason, and more often than not (in hindsight)-- It turns out to be so for the better.
