First,
there was James Crockett, helping us build our personal "Victory Gardens."
In 1979?
Bob Vila started "This Old House" renovations.
Then,
Along came a handsome model/carpenter guy named Ty, who revolutionized extreme house makeovers..... and simultaneously had women viewers swooning.
Now?
We are lucky to have the forward-thinking King of Re-Use. Giving us useful, and very economical, "Quick fixes".... for an everyday lifestyle.
Is he a decorator?
*No, but he does provide us confidence building to become our own.....
helping us feel comfortable executing our own unique styles.
Is he a Garage Sale & Flea Market Maven?
*No, but he ‘takes' us there, and explains a cryptic culture,
while not absorbing any of the ‘negative' characteristics.
Why? Because his mission is not of greed & quick profit.....
No,
He is the Super-Man of eco-friendly,
and of course FABulous,
Household Article Re-Use!
His mission?
To help all of us neophytes covert those under-utilized souvenirs of recent history into real tools for living a comfortable lifestyle. It is "comfortable," because he helps us express our inner selves in our living environs.....producing a physical extension that is ‘home,' because it reflects us.
Taking seemingly innocuous Archeological relics of Americana, or family history, he shows us how to magically transform them into useful (and very economical ;-) tools of modern life. He is not a fasionista, though the results are artful. He is the pragmatic prophet of smart re-use.
His tagline?
"Convert it, sell it, or give it away!"
Does Martha have to worry? No, Bruce doesn't want his name on everything in our house. He wants you to have your ‘signature' on the things you live with everyday; by empowering us to be bold and clever in their acquisition, and placement.
Feng Shui?
No, Your way ;-)
The light humor, and anecdotal stories in Bruce's book: "Garage Sale America" make it an enjoyable and easy read. Never taking himself, or anyone else, too seriously; he is none-the-less respectful of individual tastes and ‘expressions.' This self effacing, and humble, approach makes Bruce as endearing as he is helpful. Sincerity projects from between the written lines; so it is easy to see how his many mentors in the ‘field' enjoyed sharing their secrets of the ‘trade.' For example, he is as comfortable on "The Today Show," as their Lifestyle "Quick Fixer," as he is on the seat alongside The World's Oldest Garage Saler, Ms. Wini Williams of 90 years (page 62).
Are you unfamiliar with the wide-world of online buying? Have no fear, Bruce shares his first misadventures on EBay to ease your first time. Although, I'm not sure if it's a real problem to end up with a service for 50 of Franciscan Starburst china!! ;-)
At the risk of sounding all Polly Anna, you won't find a person that doesn't enjoy something about Bruce's book. I tried, testing it on dealers and normal people in Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Toronto, Montreal, Pennsylvania, Delaware; and, of course in Atlanta, Georgia...... the land of mass purchasing, and casual discards. Everyone smiled at something, and so will you.
The book is a wonderful coffee table keeper; and you'll have a hard time shaking Bruce too, as he continues to help Saturday "Today Show" viewers get in touch with their inner collector ‘freak,' while simultaneously (and thankfully :-) incorporating his unique 12 step program of de-materialization.

For the Gather Garage Sale Network,
this is Patrick Mahoney reporting......
Enjoy! :-)

Excellent!!!
C'est la vie....
:-)
It wasn't too hard, given the delight this book was to read. The hard part? Not getting all effusive, because it really is a special book.
I've been doing garage sales/auctions/flea markets for most of my life.....see: Patricks Garage Sales antics, and how he re-fashioned his 1970's house into French country
From my experience, I can safely say that Bruce hits the nail on the head; and when you see him on "The Today Show?" You see that he is real too.
In today's world?
Thats a huge relief, eh?
Enjoy the book and videos!
:-)
what a fabulous review... and an amazing summary of what it is i do. you can't imagine how i've tried to succinctly put that into sentence form for years! ;) i can't thank you enough for your thoughtfulness and your darn great writing yourself. i'm wowed. thanks for watching me on the today show this morning! and for being a gather friend.
;-) De-materializing is kind of empowering isn't it? After a while, things begin to own us if we aren't careful, eh? :-)
Gather.com, FREE.
and hey karl b... you are a living bargain!!!!!
why pay more, right?
have fun treasure hunting!
You are truly Bruce's one man fan club he doesn't need anyone else to market his book he has you. He is very cute and fines it easy to make people like him. I would still like to take him on when it comes to some thift shopping. I have been during it all of my life I think my mother had me in a Goodwill thrift store. It's nice to see one of the gathers getting some real attention though tell him to keep it up...
while I tried to remain objective it was hard. There aren't many books on this topic, and Bruce has become the leader in the field. So why hold back? And, I tried to mimic his humor a bit for this one.....
"Is it a bird?"
"Is it a plane?"
"No, its superman!"
Once you read the book, and see his quick fix makeovers on "The Today Show," it will make more sense....
Ron, I Want that table! ;-)
Hey, dude, when I drove through rural Penn a few weeks back I passed up a table just like that (only all the legs we off ;-), and now regret it. It was solid oak, and I offered the guy $50....I should have gone to $75, eh? It was really a solid piece, and those last forever....even if you have to re-glue/refinish from time to time, eh? :-)
Missy, I feel bad for your hubby....but, alas, its something you can have fun doing on your own. All my "spouses" have mildly disapproved, until the see the benefits (i.e. great deals and better furniture thru fixed up antiques ;-)
Thanks, Maureen and Jared for zapping me with DB 10's....maybe it will be a featured article now.... OMG, did u see that just pig fly by? ;-o
Amelie, I just re-posted this review on Barnes and Noble's website and saw that the book....since it is new....is only like $16....it would be a great present 4 your mom. Every woman I tried it on loved it....hence my unavoidable glowing review. And also, the fact, that I can't be as mean and cranky as a New York reviewer ;-)
The reviews on Barnes and Noble seem more glowing than mine, even. Imagine!
:-)
