Bottled Water Part 2

While watching the national news on ABC tonight they did another story on bottled water.  Of course I listened intently on what the issue was this time.  It seems that the government is cracking down on bottlers of water to provide the origin of their waters.  Coca Cola bottling company which bottles Aquafina finally admitted what a particular code on their label means.  It means that their water is from LOCAL TAP WATER.  I don't know about you but this had been rumoured before, but I refused to believe that anyone could be so dishonest and outright rip the entire public off!!  But, its true!!  We are paying for tap water that we can get out of our own taps people.  From what the news report said we can actually fill that bottle 5000 times with our own tap for the price that we pay for ONE bottle of the bottled water.  Amazing I know, but am angry because I have been one of those people who has been loyal to this brand of water for years and have been duped into believing that this water was good for us or better than tap water.

What do you think of this?  And will you continue buying bottled water with the onset of this news?  Should we boycott Coca Cola and all of the other bottling companies who are doing this with water?  Please think about this and how it affects you and your familes and lets discuss it.

I think it is criminal.

I also think it is criminal to buy those things in the first place. Do you know that scientists agree that it may take as long as one THOUSAND years for each of these bottles to break down in the landfills? Isn't that criminal? Then there is the fact that the same industry put out false reports saying that if you reused the bottles after drinking the water, they break down and cause carcinogens to enter the body. That was just recently proven WRONG. It is an out and out lie. It is merely an attempt to have people keep buying more bottles instead of refilling them.

I'm glad I never got into bottled water!

typical US Corporation taking the people who keep them in business for a ride. Question is, how do you make these corporations pay for such fraud? I am in love with 7-up and I occasionally drink pepsi cola. Do I just stop buying them? Let these punks see what its like not to make money.?

I've stayed away from Aquafina since I first heard that rumor. Normally, if I'm home, I just use tap water-- filtered with the trusty Brita filter, as the NJ water is not so good. And if I'm out, and buying something bottled, I feel odd paying money for water, so I'll go with a different beverage.
I do, however, used bottled water (though, usually the cheap storebrand) for my fish. (Spoiled fish? heh, I just don't trust the tap water here, though.) And I like having some bottles on hand for when I go horseback riding, but those are usually just Poland Spring, and when the bottle's done, I refill it with filtered tapwater.
(I will admit, though, that their Aquapod packaging amuses me greatly.)

If I do go out of my way to buy myself bottled water for non-riding purposes, I end up getting Fiji water. I do think there's a more pleasant taste to it, and they do a nice job with the packaging! heh.

I think that is very dishonest and unfair. While I dont buy bottled water because I think its cleaner I still like the idea of it being cleaner.
I will always buy bottled water, more than anything because it is convenient. I like being able to take it with me everywhere and then throw it out when I am done not haul it around. I have lost countless nalgene bottles.
And they have lots of well water in michigan..it takes like crap.
We really don't need to drink bottled water here in Omaha, the water is safe,
the tap water is probably from here since there is a bottling plant here. I always had a feeling that those past rumors were true,,in fact I think it was one of my first comments to some friends when I seen they were selling bottled water.

I have been telling my daughter all along that the bottled water isnt any different than what I have in my refrigerator. My well is on spring tap. I have two filters on my fridge which gives me purified water. But one good point about bottled water and the new craze is more people are drinking water than cola,s. Thats a plus.

Ewww I heard of aquafina too. So I never bought their water. My mom had some and I opened one and you could tell it wasn't spring water..it tasted crappy. I usally drink dasini but i dont know if thats tap water?? Poland springs taste the best to me.

I do not, nor have I ever spent a penny for water I can get free, and though I know the water is processed and safe I do put it through a filter. It's not what they did was illegal, the industry was never regulated from the first day they started bottling water.

Corina - You're right it is criminal to sell this to the public under the pretext that they are doing it under but business is business is what they would say. You are a very smart lady not to have been taken in by these people and yes I know how long it takes for that stuff to disentegrate, ions. Lets hope more people like you learn about those plastic bottles and thinks before buying more of them.

True American - I hear you. I love coca cola and bought Aquafina for as long as its been on the market thinking it was better than tap. What do we do? Quit drinking what we love to prove a point or just blow it off as another part of life? Good questions you posed. (For me quitting drinking coca cola is not an option...I'm just not even going to quit drinking my cokes!)

Tory - You're another smart person in the bunch by not going for the popular bottled water deal. That was my water of choice even if I did have to pay up to $1.49 sometimes! Thats pretty expensive tap water don't you think? Isn't that Fiji close to $2.00 a bottle? Ooh too expensive for me. I do believe you have some spoiled fish! lol!

I knew about the bottled water coming from tap- I usually buy it for travel or I try to keep it for emergencies.

Barbi - I'm not quite sure yet what stance to take on the Aquafina. I have plenty of drinking water bottles that I've bought but I guess I'm just too lazy to fill them before I go anywhere. Its always been so convenient to stop somewhere and pick up a nice and chilled bottle of water wherever you go so? Who knows what I'll do.

Randee - You're lucky to live in Omaha my friend because not all of us are so lucky in the quality of water there is. We are fortunate here in Dallas but some people in the burbs aren't as lucky and have YUCKY tasting water and it smells bad too!

I buy my water from a water store. They have this huge, 9 stage water purification system. I've actually seen it working. So I only trust this water. I don't drink water out of my tap. I live in an apartment, and sometimes the water is different colors, so I will not drink that! I don't buy bottled water.

Joe - You're the smart man indeed by not being like the rest of us and wasting money on bottled water! I'm now trying to think about how much money I could have saved by taking my own tap water in my own bought thermos like bottles. Its crazy. And, too bad that the water industry wasn't regulated. Thats not fair for anyone!

Demongirl - that water purification system at your water store sounds outstanding!! I wish our water store had that. And, are you serious about your tap water sometimes being different colors?? Yucky!! And I thought some of the water that I've tasted in the past was bad but no colors...yikes! Wonder whats up with that?

I buy bottled water for the bottle and then refill it with tap. When the bottle is worn out, I recycle it and buy another full bottle.

Theresa - Thats a good idea about refilling your bottles but I heard that you have to rinse those bottles in really hot water before reusing because they are known to carry bacteria when using them often.

I dispute it being a "waste". Do you like the taste? If yes then whats the problem? Even if the source is from the tap, it undergoes additional processing that alters the flavor. Its convienient. Stores easily in your car for emergencies.

Are we miffed because we want to envision a babbling brook splashing just melted pristine glacier runoff down an unspoiled mountainside and into our little bottles? :)
If you like the taste, whats the beef?

Some regions have foul tasting water. My local water tastes fine but I buy bottled too. A couple go in my car, one goes in my gym bag, one on my nightstand. handy dandy. I don't care where it comes from.

I'm with you, Bret. Bottled water is covenient and is filtered several times more than we can at home. Even the cheapest of bottled water goes thru filtering processes we can't duplicate. Good srticle tho.

When bottled water came out there was articles on it. Coke and the others who saw a market and got rich on people who could not afford it. same old shit. do not be surprised if they do not tax the water next on your use. anything to make a buck!!! who cares who it hurts.

Karen - thanks for correcting me on my gross error. Everyone please excuse the error in reporting. I got confused it appears. I too drink mineral water from a bottle and that used to be Perrier but now I drink Pellegrino which I much prefer because the flavor is more robust for a water anyway. I don't mind paying extra for mineral water because of its positive effects on the digestive system but paying for tap water because its convenient is paying a heavy price for convenience. I know I say that now but I still do it. On my night table I have a bottle there now. We here in my home also buy bottled water by the five gallon container for our dispenser and that is supposedly spring water. Ha! I guess the bottom line is that I hate having been lied to by the companies thats all.

I drink bottle culligan water, I trusted culligan for years, I hate Platte water, and never care for Omaha water, and grew up on well water way before Omaha became a city...yes Randee omaha once was a small town he he I just used the big container and get my own bottle and know I am safe,,,,

Bret - Obviously I liked the taste otherwise I wouldn't have been buying it since its inception on the market. I concur with all of your statements regarding the benefits of said bottle of water. They're all true I just don't like being lied to I guess is my biggest reason for being "miffed". Our water here in Dallas is also good but we too still buy bottled spring water for our dispenser. How do we know its not just glorified tap water also? Who's to say these days what you get.
I don't like the issue regarding what all of that plastic is doing to the environment, but I am guilty of not recycling just like most.

Sometimes in the summer, our water has a nasty taste because of "algae bloom." The water comes from the Mississippi River. I live in St. Paul. Minneapolis water tastes better, due to a different source and filtration system. I endure the algae taste because it only lasts a couple of weeks and it's hard to drag me to Minneapolis just for water, and because a little mild suffering is good for the soul.

I don't drink bottled water either.

Hi Esther and friends. Man, Esther - you know how to get millions of comments! Way to go girl!

I think Karen T got it right above and yet many comments continued to blast Coke and Pepsi. They get the water from the tap but THEN they filter the hell out of it. Personally Aquafina - MADE BY PEPSI - tastes the best to me - the convenience of bottled water for taking to games, etc. and the low cost at places like COSTCO - make it the best way to drink water.

Esther - you are a master at this stuff. You stirred the pot and look at all the smells that came out of it! :o)
