...everything's gonna be alright.
Or, so George W. Bush believes.
I've wondered for some time why President Bush is mysteriously calm in the face of multiplying calamities. After all, we live in a world where our children will continue to face terror attacks, see the collapse of the world's oceans, and wage wars over water supplies. But George is unphased.
Columnist David Brooks, NY Times: "Far from being worn down by the past few years, (President) Bush seems empowered. His self-confidence is the most remarkable feature of his presidency." I question, however, what the source of his serenity is...those bike rides, the time off back at the ranch or up visiting dad, practising the swagger walk while recovering from polyps removal?
Apparently not. It's more of a theological perspective, if you believe the President himself. He believes in the Almighty, and that "the gift of that Almighty is freedom'.
So, there it is. He's serene because he knows History is moving to Freedom. Everything will work out in Iraq. It has to. It's an historical inevitability.
When Vladimir Putin sealed off Red Square and officially scrapped the October Revolution holiday and protests, did he think the victory of socialism is assured by History too.
Sure, comrade. And Iraq's gonna work out just fine too.
The consolations of faith are that God will bring liberal democracy, and that History (a Communist deity) will inevtiably bring socialism, no matter what we do, does not bring serenity to my mind. However, I'm not an ideologue president of anything. "Victory", whatever that means, is not assured, nor can the winds of fate provide any comfortable movement.
