Ocean's Beauty

Lovely maiden

Long red hair cascades down bare shoulders and

blows in the salty sea breeze.

She sings a song never before

heard by human ears.

Enchanting and hypnotic

The maiden sits atop jagged rocks that go unseen.

Murky waters hide a graveyard of ships.

The ocean beauty is a rare site to sailors.

The mermaid is neither fish nor woman.

Her beauty and voice lure

men to a fate below the water's surface.

Home is in the depths of the ocean.

So, she drags them down to the sea floor

not knowing men need air to breathe.

When I was a child we went to one of those places where "mermaids" were swimming behind the glass, I have always been fascinated since. This was fun to read.

Another fine poem Anne, but I would be remiss if I did not contribute my two cents...there is a huge difference between a "mermaid" and a "siren." Sirens are the ones to lure sailors to their doom with their songs and beauty from afar. Mermaids are more playful and helpful to the wayward mariner. At least that's what I got out of my mythology studies.

You are right Dragonsoul but I found another entry on mermaids that I based this poem on:"Much like Sirens, mermaids in stories would sometimes sing to sailors and enchant them, distracting them from their work and causing them to walk off the deck or cause shipwrecks. Other stories would have them squeeze the life out of drowning men while trying to rescue them." from an online encylodedia

We can make our own myths and populate them with our own mythical creatures. Now I am pondering my own mermaidness. Did I suffocate my lover while trying to love him? He thought so.
