Well, I just now cleaned up the list of groups that I am a member of. It was 24 pages long. Can you believe one person can be in that many groups? I went through and removed myself from the ones that I have never posted to. That took it down to 21 pages. It took forever so I will go through them again another day to remove myself from the ones that I have not posted to in the last month. Wow that was a lot of groups.
I often post articles to catch all groups but I am wondering…does anyone ever go to the those groups to read the articles? I have to admit that I do not. If nobody goes and reads the articles, what good does it do to post them there? I mean the purpose of posting to various groups is to get them out there so others can read and comment. In my opinion, A good article starts a conversation with other gather members.
I currently have 84 group invitations in my invite box. I hate to even go it and see what they are. I try to join groups that my friends start but often find that I do not really fit in the groups.
I find that no matter what groups I post too, the same people comment on them. Very seldom do I get a comment from an unfamiliar name. So I have some questions for you.
Do you go to catch all groups to read the content there?
Do you belong to a lot of groups?
How do you sort through all the groups and decide which ones to join?
Do you join groups just because a friend started it?
How do you decide what articles to read?

I join groups that I know I will be interested in no matter who the owner is. If a connection starts a group I would hold no interest in I decline the invitation.
When I get my notification of publication I look at the title and the few words that come in the invitation first. I open all images and photo essays. Articles and poems usually all get opened and at least skimmed over if not read in their entirety. It really depends on how much time I have. My first priority is always my connections posts. I want to read and comment on all of these every day I can.
What I wanna know is...when you go to publish something and get your long list of groups that you can publish to, is there any way to reorganize those instead of them being in the order that you joined?
I do go to a lot of groups (the main ones on my interest list). Say, for instance....I love history and genealogy. So, I go to those groups and check out the new articles. Same for other topics of interest.
Do you belong to a lot of groups? -
Yes, and most of them are of interest to me. Like you, I am going to have to go in and pare them down, as I've left a lot of 'early joined' groups on my list that I really should remove.
How do you sort through all the groups and decide which ones to join? -
I decided it this way: I ask myself, "Is this something I would post an article or photo to?" or, "Is this a group I would go to on a regular basis and read?"
Do you join groups just because a friend started it? -
I did, when I first got on Gather. Now, I join groups that hold the same interest as I do.
How do you decide what articles to read? -
I am attracted to the 'hook', the title, and my interest in such articles. I also try to comment back on someone's article or photo when they comment on mine.
Good questions, Connie! I hope my reply helps some!
I am not sure what you mean by "catch all groups".
I find going through the groups listing when I want to publish an article is daunting.
'Catch all groups' I assume you to mean the 'post anything' type, which is where all of mine go, unless I am in a particular group where the topic would fit, but still goes to the 'catch all ones.'
I try to read, rate, comment on as much as I can everyday. I usually try to get back to where the date changes to the previous day - but some days I am not on here at all, so I know I miss some good stuff, but what to do???
Once in a great while, I seem to be caught up and go to 'recently published' and find new things/groups/connections to add to my ever growing list.
I try not to join a group unless I think I can contribute. Sometimes I'm not clear what the group is about and I join until I get a chance to review some articles or the theme of the group - and then may drop out if I don't feel I can participate.
I have tried to accept anyone and everyone who has asked for a connection - and only one was a spammer trying to sell me something I didn't want, need, or ask for - blocked and deleted it!!!
Did I answer the question correctly?
The general, post anything groups I don't visit. When I just want to go for it, I hit the big articles tab near the top. I often find a lot of things that I would not have seen if I just stuck to the articles for me or my groups.
Do you belong to a lot of groups? I have 11 pages, I think. I went through and weeded some out last week. That is hard t do because I am always afraid that I will miss something really great.
How do you sort through all the groups and decide which ones to join? When I am invited, I click on the link and check it out. Many I pass on, but I am glad that I was asked.
Do you join groups just because a friend started it? Only if it is something that I feel like I can contribute to or would get a kick out of being a part of.
How do you decide what articles to read? Most by the titles and by the authors.
Then again, I have run into a lot of great people by just going for it!
You can go into your settings and set the way you are receiving email notifications from groups and from individual members.
2. Not too many I don't think. Maybe 20 if that.
3. When I get invitations I check to see if it's something I would be interested. If I see a group on someone's article, I check it out to see if I would like to join.
4. No.
5. By what interests me and if the writer interests me.

I currently have 55 invitations that I haven't had time to explore. I already belong to a lot of groups and don't know if I can handle any more

have a good weekend!
And I have joined groups that friends own, but end up leaving if I never contribute.
I try to go around and check out the groups I am a member of.
It helps if I get to know people in the group, otherwise its hard to keep track of where to go. I am learning and working on it. :-)
