What DON'T they tell us?

I had a doctor's appointment on Friday with a new doctor who joined my current doctor's practice. He's an older doctor, left the area to serve his country for a bit, came back and rejoined a practice already up and going.

Now, quick background...... my cancer and medical issues surrounding it all have been with me for about 2 years now, maybe a little more.

I'm at the point where basically my future has been "you're worse off than anything I've every seen and can't believe you're even walking" along with "at this point there isn't anything else but to deal with the pain.. here's narcotics".

Suddenly, this doctor has a few other options, which are supposedly not that "out there" and have been used before... one of which is in place of the shots, taking the steroids orally.

Now I've suffered for nearly 2 1/2 years and this FINALLY comes up?! What else do the medical doctors just ignore or not tell us?

Good question Beverly. i spend my extra time always researching my liver ailments to see what is new, and what new meds may be out there......

Newer doctors prescribe to the newer ways and the older doctors know more than what's new today,,I prefer older doctors just for this reason,,,younger doctors are always giving something new that works better and usually don't work at all

It's great isn't it. We think of doctors as being super-people but in the end they are just human making them as fallible as the rest of us.

You all hit it on the head..... for sure. I don't put them (doctors) on a pedestal but I expect them to not only KNOW what they should be doing but continuously learn the newest techniques, etc. The kicker about this new idea is that... it's NOT new! It was just simply ignored by all the others to this point.

Terri.... yup... my Hershey baby is my icon. It was a year ago July 17th that he left my side to join up with the big guy. Kinda my tribute to him.

Older docs are much more willing to try older remedies than the newer docs are. New docs usually go with what the pharmaceutical reps push at them. They think more of the kickback they get than of the patient sometimes, unlike older docs that think of the Hippocratic Oath before they think about the money.

I think perhaps in this case, this older doctor got a bit of a relief from the typical day in and day out world he would have normally been in while serving our country. He came back with a fresh look and truly a better bedside manner than I've experienced in a long time.

I'm glad you had a good experience with the doctor. I agree with those who have suggested researching possilbe alternatives to some of the treatments. Sometimes we have to be our own best advocate, even when we trust the doctor.

I agree with Sara, we do have to be our own best advocate. There is a book called "Lean on me" by Nancy Davis. It is a great book with a lot of help and suggestions on how to do this. The author has MS but she has a lot of great help for anyone who is dealing with a serious illness no matter what it is.
