A woman will occupy the Oval Office in January 2008.
At least on Monday nights... The AP is reporting that when the '24' returns next winter, Tony award-winning actress Cherry Jones will be playing the role of the President. Previous film roles for Jones include "Ocean's Twelve", "Signs", and "The Perfect Storm". She also guest-starred on "The West Wing".
Some are wondering if this is a nod to Hillary Clinton's bid for the White House, an interesting departure for the show's normally conservative Fox network. Is Rupert Murdoch's empire making any concessions about the upcoming Presidential elections? Or is the show simply jumping on a popular trend in primetime programming by casting a woman as Commander in Chief? Recently, we have seen a female President in ABC's "Commander in Chief" as well as in Fox's own "Prison Break". Both shows dominated their time slots. Could "24" and its lagging ratings last season be simply trying to improve its viewership, or is the idea of a woman in the White House just becoming an easier reality for the general public to grasp?

It got me to read the whole article and think about the implications of a network which is considered conservative airing a show like this? Good questions, too!
And Taft? Now, Taft was pretty grumpy and I have it on good authority that his girth was the result of some sort of bowel problem. And Twinkies. He was thin on the inside, though, and he could scowl with the best of them!
