I think it should be legal period.

i think if it's honestly perscribed for pain than yes. Chronic pain can be horrible. Not getting relief from that pain can devastate and ruin a person. It has fewer side effects than many perscription narcotics.

I think I'd draw the line in instances where an OTC medication like aspirin, tylenol or a stool softener would do the trick. Having a hangnail isn't a reason to "legally" light up a doobie!

I think that they should legalize marijuana and criminalize alcohol.

There are other controlled substances you need prescriptions for. Why not controlled marijuana...as long it has medical benefits. It helps alleviate pain, relieves pressure in the eyes of glaucoma sufferers, calms the stomach and helps with nausea, especially for those undergoing cancer treatments. It can be used to treat hyperactivity acting to supress and calm. There are many benefits which have been studied and the government can't figure out a way to get their fair share of money from the sale of it. If they 'make it legal', being a plant that grows naturally, anyone could grow their own and not report it, so the government wouldn't get a penny. I think it should be legal outright. It's far less dangerous than alcohol...and people enjoy it. I'd rather drive home at 5 miles per hour and get their safe after getting stoned...than trying to drive drunk weaving all over and not in control.

Matt - Where do you draw the line in prescribing marijuana and who would control it?? If I asked my internist for it and it was legal, he'd give it to me without any questions asked and so would most doctors in this country. Where would it end? Would prescribing heroin be next?

Sharon - I agree that marijuana is long overdue in being legalized but you know that our government will never do anything against alcohol...they'd lose too much money!!

the point is it is illegal. If it becomes a controlled drug then it's fine. My sister-in-law died recently. It was a horrible death. She had lung cancer and drowned slowly. She was on morphine. She died peacefully. So why do we need an illegal substance? If current drugs don't work then yes, but they do work.

I think it should be legalized for medical use. I certainly could use it. (smile) I am in chronic pain. I have pain medicine for desparate times and could get more if I wanted. Salsalate 3,000mg a day takes the edge off of my pain. I want to make my pain more tolerable not stone myself out. You miss out on the fun in life if your eyes are glassed over. I have medicine for my stone hard muscles from fibro but it makes me slow and I won't drive that way. I take it when the pain is intolerable.

I think it would be a bad idea to legalize the stuff. I think our youth are becoming addicted enough to cigarettes and to add MJ to the shelf would be a disaster.

Many youth are addicted to alcohol and they can get that anywhere. I thought we were talking medicinal. Youth can get more on the street than you can get in a CVS.

I am for legalizing it for prescription use.

I seen them interviewing a lady on tv about it last nite.....she claims she gets cramps and headaches and needs it for that. I think you should have a legit medical problem it you get it prescribed.

I voted for legalization for medicinal purposes here, and would also support legalization in general. I think we've thrown a lot of money away in a war on drugs that isn't working, broken families by putting people in jail for marijuana, paid to house them while they're in jail, and so on, and maybe at this point we would have been better off treating it like we do alcohol. (I think dui's need to be treated a lot harsher but that's a whole other topic).

Yes I believe it should be legalized for medical reasons.It can make life a lot easer for those in costant pain and cancer patients. In fact I wouldn"t mind if they legalized it all together.

I think one is more cautious when driving stoned because you sober up with all you have to do. Driving drunk, you are all over the road and don't even know it. Pot mellows you out, liquor puts me to sleep but only for a few hours. My parents drank and went into rages. I never heard of any one on pot going into a rage. Course my experience with pot is minimal and goes back to 1978 when I was suicidal. I would take pot over oxycodone and demerol any day!

I have fibromyalgia and do not take any medication for the pain. It is very difficult but the side effects of the medications I have been offered leave me unable to care for my children properly. While I don't use marijuana now I have in the past and I can tell you it's side effects are MUCH milder and do not last as long as the prescription medications for pain. I never had any urges to drive while using it, either, I'd just sit there smiling and eating! :) So yes, I believe it should at least be legal for medicinal purposes, if not legal period.

I think anything that eases the suffering of the ill should be made available. Marijuana is propably one of the mildest of substances that does the most good. I think it should be legalized because anything that isn't becomes a product of the black market.

I don't think taxation will make it any more expensive than it is now, I believe it's actually more expensive now than it would be if legalized because the drug dealers overcharge to get rich / make it worth them breaking the law. I don't know about anyone else but I've never been able to get 20 jays for $3.50 like I can cigarettes...

I totally think it should be legal for those that are sick.

What gets me is grass is less toxic than cigarettes but they are legal. And I'd much rather all my neighbors smoke pot than smoke meth. Pot heads don't prostitute themselves, committ home invasions, or rob stores at gunpoint to support their pot habit. The mj creates enough inertia that they just order pizza and then take a nap.!

I read somewhere that the criminalization of marijuana was due to racism!
I grew up in the 60s and can remember when it was not such a big deal legally.
Marijuana was used extensively in Victorian times as an herbal remedy. So were a lot of other herbal remedies too. That is what they had - we rely on pharmaceuticals now to make us "feel better" but has anyone checked out the side effects listed? Scary!

i hate man-made-meds, , over-the-counter drugs are worse than Street drugs only for the simple fact(s) that - 1.there are many more of them 2. there's a pill for everything 3. who knows whats in them? what they do? , ,how do they measure them?

I was in a psychiatric ward where they had me on 5 pills + 3 experimental ones each day , ,tell me, , how are they to find out which pill does what when they made a guinnea-pig like this outa me? , ,humans should stop mess'n with meds and find solutions.

P.S - if we had forrests of Marijuana, we'd have a greater air supply, + we wouldn't need to smoke the herb to feel the effects, , it makes a better rejuvinative atmosphere that would boost the performance of our own

i damn near broke my neck at work, didnt even get x-rayed for it and was fired after not getting properly fixed-up, , to this day, i have seizures and so on, , was told by chiropractors that "I'm surprised your walking, you seem to have rotated a vertabrae, and you also put some ribs out" - i tend to 're-align' myself by over-working the pain, , i make it hurt 'til it doesnt anymore , , i try to fix myself up, basically

Opinion is like assholes... Every one has one so here is mine.....

Don't we have enough problems with Alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs that you want to have another one available on the supermarket shelf's. How many people do you need in the Hospital before every one says enough. how big do you want the Hospitals to be. While every one is trying to promote a better healthier life style and the Government is trying to have healthy people in the community some want to legalise something else that puts people in the way of danger, by them being incapaciated and not in control of their actions. Even more kids In the cemetery and in our jails for trying to do stupid things.

I think it should just be legalized. Too many people use it for recreational use. The only thing with that is that it would then need to be regulated.

I believe firmly in the fact that one CAN function on marijuana much better than on alcohol and many prescribed drugs that are given out arbitrarily. I too believe that we should be given the right to do as we please in the privacy of our own homes. I don't say let everyone smoke it everywhere freely but at least for the government not to condemn us for smoking it within the confines of our homes without the threat of persecution. I know that there are alot of states that have more liberal laws pertaining to being caught with marijuana, but far too many (including my state, Texas) are still very rigid in their persecution and prosecution of people caught with it. Just yesterday over 5000 plants were found in an open plot of land just off of the highway between Dallas and Fort Worth. They had been planted there and mixed amongst the weeds and other plants in the area. All of the plants were promptly uprooted and destroyed. I almost cried to see that.

I live in Oregon and it is legel medical here and also to grow for perscription users.
However the feds. come in and bust people sick ,old people who are not harming anyone. Until it is legel federally you are still in danger of going to jail. I have had more then one doctor say they would give me a perscription, I have a terminal illness and hurt all the time. but I will not have my name put on that list until the feds stop.

Congratulations. I am in pain with childhood RA, cancer, all kinds of health problems my doctor said it would help with the pain i am in. I think it is up to that person, i am on enough pain relieves and meducations i would not want to add to it, but in saying that i watch a program on this subject and there is people in great need and stand behind it and says it workds. I think it should be legal - period. Think about people you've seen drunk and those you've seen high on pot, and tell me who's more out of control. Of course, if they legalized it, just think what all the deep pockets would do with all the taxes they'd collect. Don't get me started.....

The reason the gov't won't legalize it is because it is too easily grown almost anywhere. Thus they can't effectively control it's distribution (read tax it's use). It is by far less dangerous than alcohol. Can't remeber the last time I saw somewhat stoned guy pick up a bong and smash it over someones head......Happens at bars fairly regularly......

Esther: I read your article as a question posed to medicinal purposes for marijuana...how this compares to alcohol is beyond me. I realize that some use alcohol as a pain reliever, but that wasn't your question was it? If someone needs something for pain and it's been shown to help alleviate pain (as marijuana has) then by all means legalize it. I don't believe that anyone in chronic pain (and especially terminal pain) should suffer and should be able to decide what legally works for them.

I'm a lot like jay... I see the good and the bad. For medicinal purposes I know it helps, or so they have said. I have a friend that has had horrible bouts of cancer and the weed is the only way he has been able to deal with it. I'm not so sure I'd want to go around on whacky weed all the time but then again, what's the diff if they go around on that to kill the pain or go on vicodin and oxy? Doped up is doped up. I don't want to live that way at all... but that's my preference. I have the ability to take the narcotics for my pain and hate it when I have to resort to it. So I can see the reason for allowing it to be legal for a "drug" as in prescription. Then again, is it really so much worse than an alcoholic beverage? Sure, it has the effects of tobacco/smoking on the lungs... but we have regular tobacco that's legal and booze and combine them you get the same effect. So what's the real diff?

I'm torn. A part of me says just legalize it but another part says it is 'bad' and shouldn't be readily available. I just can't honestly say. I think as a "drug" with a prescription is what I'd go for more than just legalizing it completely.

Legalize it, regulate it. For people who need it for medical purposes but dont like to smoke, simply take out the relevant chemicals and put it in pill. Someone up above mentioned to make it illegal to drive while high, it already is, every state has a DUI law that includes controlled substances also, not JUST alcohol. I arrest a gentleman for driving while on pain meds, he was all over the road and could barely keep his eyes open.

Here is the thing.
How can we say it is ok in one state medically and not in another. One person does not suffer more or less just because they live in Oregon or Utah.
If educated people, doctors, lawyers, and yes lawmakers all got on board to ok it for prescription use then the use of it is validated.
Period.

And if you ever have to go to the medical community for a problem that can't be solved with an operation, realize this. DOCTORS PRACTICALLY THROW DARTS AT A DART BOARD CHOOSING WHICH MEDICATION TO 'EXPERIMENT' ON YOU IF THE PREVIOUS ONE DOESN'T WORK. Then they will actually ask if you want to try this or that as they ar running out of options. So if you can help a doctor prescribe meds for yourself, why not self-prescribe in the first place. Nobody knows your symptoms better than you. Nobody knows what works or not better than you.
As for those whining about epidemic problems like abuse or driving while using, the same care and caution needs to be excercised as when using alcohol, taking prescription meds, or even OTC sleep aids or cough medicine.

A little over a year ago my father was diagnosed with brain and lung cancer. My father's doctor immediately order aggressive radiation and chemo treatments. The treatments were very hard on my father. Due to the chemo my father had constant nausea, which made very difficult for him to keep anything down. It pained me to see him this way and many times I was tempted to call a musician friend or two, in an attempt to procure a few joints for my father, in hopes of relieving his pain. I never did and he passed away a few months later. To this day I hate myself for not doing it.
I personally believe the reason, medical marijuana is not more readily made available, is because the government is not getting a cut, like they do with cigarettes and liquor.

I recently had a knee injury that gave me quite a bit of pain i got a script from the doc, went home and didn't feel a thing. I don't know why I'm even responding to this, but here goes. Legalize it, then complain some more about the price of health care. We spend billions of dollars, to try and repair the damage people who drink, smoke and do recreational drugs have done to themselves over time. Cirrhosis of the liver caused by alchol is a long and painful, and yes even costly result of this annoying vice. It makes me sad to see patients come in through the ER night after night, after a long bought of drinking. Generally they arrive on our dime via ambulance due to some stupid act that the public will flip the bill for. Lung cancer is another sad and preventable disease. We have legal drugs for pain, they are called narcotics and require a prescription. It sounds to me like everyone is looking for a license to walk around stoned. And who is going to decide "Medical necessity?" And what about the kids growing up in that house? It just seems very dangerous. Way more cons than pros. Thanks for letting me voice my opinion.

I believe that if one state has it legal to prescribe then I beleive all of the states in the union should follow. The pain some people suffer and only to be given heavy pain killers that knock you and practically unconscious is ridiculous. At least if you were prescribed marijuana you'd be in a good mood, you'd eat well, you'd be conscious and so many other things. Lets vote for the legalization of marijuana for medicinal use first, then we'll talk about the rest later...
