Really Messed up

I just found out a couple of days ago that our state does not have a law that makes it 2 murders when a pregnant mother is killed.  The reason that I found this out was on the local news.  The reason that this came up was because last month, a women was killed at a local gas station while delivering papers (sometime between 3am and 5am when someone found her body).  The horrible thin is, she was 8 monthes pregnant when she was killed (she was stabbed several times).  Her name was Jenna Neilson.  She left behind two boys and her husabnd.  When the person who did this is caught (if they are ever found) they will only be charged with her murder.  Not with the murder of her unborn son.  Apparently the people who pass (or don't pass) laws for this state don't think that killing a pregant women and her unborn child is enough to be charged with two murders.

That is ridiculous, they need to make it that there are two murders...
That is awful! I believe he should be sentenced on the basis of two murders.

That is terrible. I think it should be two murders all over the US. That is messed up. Two people are dead. Just because one is a baby does not change the fact.

I do believe our state recognizes that as being two murders... all states should.

our state recognizes the the murder of the fetus also. they need to recognize these mothers are being killed for simple reasons and the penalty should be automatically life in prison. it's a cold heartless person who would kill anyone, especially a defenseless woman.

I think that it is a fairly new thing to make it two murders, like the past ten years or so. I know that here they didn't do it until the Lacey murder. (or maybe my state was behind??)

I have read that the #1 killer of pregnant mothers is homicide and usually it is their partner. They should all go down for two!

Only 25 states recognize the murder of a fetus as a crime throughout the entire gestation period. Another 10 states have laws declaring the murder of a fetus beyond 8 weeks as a crime. That leaves 15 states where it is not considered criminal to kill an unborn child.

This is sad, and it is ashame, and hard to believe. Maybe the person that murdered her will find the same fate as their end. I don't know if our state has this law or not, but I am going to find out.

Some States it is. Remember Scott Peterson in California. He killed his wife Lacey? He was convicted of double murder.

Why does this surprise anyone? While I agree with you because I am fiercely pro-life, why would it be? Isn't it a double standard for the government to consider it OK to kill an unborn child when the mom does it but capital murder when anyone else does? Seems to me it needs to be one way or the other - either it's a crime or it's not. What amazes me is that any states say that it IS a crime at all. I'm glad, but amazed.

P.S. Gwen - interesting statistic about the #1 killer of pregnant mothers. Here's one for you - the number one killer of babies is their own mother - with the Supreme Court and society's blessing. Four million and counting (over twice the number of people killed in the Holocaust)
