It's one of those great mysteries Gather refuses to divulge...they don't want anyone figuring out their algorythms on how points are distributed. I'm sure we don't get as many points for participating as people think. I believe points have more to do with length of writing...and the more popular a person is; the more points they're award for posting, rating and commenting...giving and recieving.
Never knew there were points for images. Got to get someone in Gather to contact me. I was never able to signup for rewards and Gather is not responding.
They dont tell you but Its more about how many people VIEW your picture and comment on it as well as if you use tags and how many tags you use and if you post it to groups. Also when you write articles and comments how long it is plays into how many points you get. Thats the information I got from the Gather Guide Dan
Pictures? The whole process gather process is complex (I guess) and seems to be mysteriously shrouded in secrecy. I don't know how I get points or anything. I just notice that every so often my point total jumps.
Is anyone on the "inside" of the gather and can shed some light on this subject?
I am one that tracks my points. Each day I mark down what I do such as articles, comments and such. I can tell you, it varies almost by the day. Not a whole lot but there is no set in stone "do this and you will receive that". I've come close to working out a pattern. Maybe if I hang out here long enough, I'll figure it out. :-)
If it were up to me, the entire concept of points would be dispensed with and we'd be forced to articulate an opinion and participate solely for the intellectual benefit. Ha ha ha. "Some people say I'm a dreamer..."
I'm guessing that we get somewhere between a half a point and one whole point as a base for each picture posting (size, number of tags, types of tags, what groups and the number of groups no doubt make some difference). Points go up almost immediately in varying fractions and whole points based on views, ratings, features, number of comments and length of comments.
Let me repeat that I am guessing. I do not have any actual skinny on, or from the inside of Gather. My guess is based on my experience with web site creation, operation and the thinking behind succesful economic models for the Internet. Reality may vary.
I'm still taking notes on points and now have read more than I've learned in a month, just reading and posting here. Now... off to check my POINTS!!! Drool, drool, slobber, slobber!! I need points! Gimme points, I want something free!

It was a good question, one I have pondered often, but decided I could live without knowing and besides I enjoy showing off my new hobby as I learn
