Is It Me Or Is This Weird?

I'm in the Caribou Coffee Shop (no surprise, it's a day off school and where else would I go?) I just noticed there's a guy sitting at a table across the room with a bunch of other guys. This guy has an IV pole with a back of clear liquid hanging from it and he's wearing hospital 'jammies. There aren't any real hospitals close, but there's one little clinic type place that often has overnight patients near where I live about 2 blocks away, across the (6 lane) street.

Sigh. Just when you think you've adapted to living in Korea and nothing will really surprise you, there's a guy with an IV in the coffee shop.

Well, it's better than the guy with the IV pole wearing hospital jammies I saw buying cigarettes at the market across the alley.

Oh my goodness. Seoul is sort of difficult to get used to, isn't it? I was in utter culture shock. It could be worse, though...

Very unusual of course. If you had seen my granddad when he pulled out his I.V.'s and left the hospital in Santa Ana with no shoes on and just the hospital gown on and the back open to show the world all that no one should have seen...that was a sight to behold! lol!!

It's just the next step in the evolution of coffee shops -- IV caffeine delivery. :)

I agree. That sight would creep me out. I don't think that that would be unique to Korea though. But, I don't think that it is right to let patients out unsupervised. Are Koreans that liberal that the possible exposure of male or female butt is not an issue? Maybe I'm just an old geezer, but the whole idea grosses me out!
Maybe he's a chemo patient at a day clinic or some other clinic that's not necessarily inpatient. Why freak out about it if he feels like a less depressing atmosphere? And why do hospital patients need "supervision"? That sounds really creepy, Jack --- are sick people somehow going to terrorize the general population?

My jaw would drop to the side walk if I saw that here. Minus the IV stand, not so much. Folks go AWAL from the hospitals here for walks pretty often.

It was just such a strange thing to see. It was a standard IV pole, not a portable one. The big hospitals here usually have a coffee shop inside (a real one, not a hospital cafeteria) and where Dennis is getting his surgery there's a convenience store. I think someone could make a killing if they developed an IV pole people could carry around more easily. Maybe something with a collapsable stand on ths bottom so you could fold it up like an umbrella when you wanted to carry it somewhere.
