The food press is all over it, but no one else is paying much attention to the so-called farm bill coming up for renewal this September. True, the bill isn’t relevant to everyone. Those who don’t eat or drink to stay alive needn’t pay much attention. But if you do count those activities as central to your continued well-being then a few moments of consideration might be worthwhile.

Next week I plan to get into some of the history to explain how we got where we are.
I'm glad you're doing this series. Are you familiar with musician Adrienne Young? She's using her touring and records to give her a platform to support family farms and educate people about small farms and sustainable agriculture.
I will have to stop thinking that this isn't my problem, or it doesn't have anything to do with me!
Our Farmer's Markets are chock-full of smaller farmers, maybe it is time for a road trip Kevin:) I love that I can drive by it growing this week and see it on my table next week:)
No, I haven;t heard of her.
Gwen,
Nope, although it's difficult to generalize with something as complex as the farm bill, most of the subsidies are based on acreage.
There were plenty of small farmers in Sacramento and Oregon too, but very few in Nashua, NH or the DC area.
here's a link to a story I did about Adrienne Young. You may want to check out her website as well.
Thanks.
Donna,
Blech.
I wish I could jot down all his remarks. My husband worked in Nuclear Energy for 10 years and is convinced that many of our energy problems could be solved by using nuclear. Of course, the recent spill in Japan will create fear in the public, and politicians being the cowards they are, will capitalize on that. The lobbyists must be in heaven this week.
I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.
