So I have just started volunteering at the Humane Society. I have gone a few times since last week's orientation. When school starts this will be a more regular thing and I won't have to drag the kids, Frog and Monkey, along. They enjoy playing with the animals but Frog is a bit mischevious and needs to be watched like a hawk so she doesn't "wander" into the wrong area.
The shelter is very full right now. Spring and Summer are "puppy and kitten seasons" and there are many new litters. I am not even counting the special needs and sick cats and dogs that lurk behind the staff only door that leads to the clinic wing. There are some very sickpuppies in the building right now and many many animals are needing to be adopted to safety.
I am sure it is the same in the shelters in your area. In honor of "puppy and kitten season" adoptions are now only $50 down from $75. That includes basic medical (shots worming, maybe more for the at risk), spay/neuter, and a bag of IAMS.
There is a puppy I am thinking about sponsoring. He is supposed to be from a doberman litter but he looks like a sled dog with a sort of German Shepard colored coat. He has a stripe between his eyes. You would expect him to have blue eyes but his are a very light/yellow tan. He resides in the lobby along with severeal other hopeful adoptables, all the rooms are full right now. Even the conference room is now a dog room and is full to the brim.
Please consider adopting from a shelter. There are so many animals that need homes right now. If you can't adopt just yet do your shopping with popular online merchants through a charity shopping site such as Buy For Charity.
If anyone wants to contribute, the shelter I volunteer at is the Humane Society of Pulaski County. Just enter that in the cause search. Thanks :)
If shopping is not your thing click the button on the Animal Rescue Site. Every click is a donation of .6 bowls of food for animals. You can donate every day.

And don't just consider puppies or kittens. There are many adults dogs that want to be adopted, too. All three of my dogs and my cat are rescue animals, including two dogs who were adopted as adults. They are great animals, well behaved, and get along with each other famously.
