Evolutionarliy speaking whales walked from land and into the sea around 60 million years ago. 60 million years!
Talk about coming face to face with the magic of nature and the universe.
A visiting friend took me on my very first whale watch to catch a glimpse of these incredible beings on Monday. As a naturalist, I was itching to return for more. As a human, my soul simply soared.
And as magic would have it, I was invited back by the senior naturalsit, Jon, for a possible job as an on board teaching naturalist. What a thrill. So on Saturday, I went to learn the ropes, got to join the crew and be back, once again, with the largest and most magical and mysterious animals on earth.
Every whale watch is different as is every whale. Some like Coral, a large male Humpback whale, go about their business paying no attention, whatsoever, to the boats while others, like the one in these pictures, come straight on over to get a closer look at the watchers and their boats.
Now I am back home longing to be at sea, reading every resource I was given, waiting a call and dreaming the dream. Now that is magic!
