I will admit that I love going to hotels. I love the pools, the workout areas, the room service, and the relaxation. No one to answer to and no one to ask questions. Just plain old me time. So, when we got a gift certificate to a Bed and Breakfast, I was a little hesitant. This past week, we decided to give it a try.
My hesitation was from thinking about actually being in someone else's home. I figured I would feel much like a visitor instead of a pampered guest like I hope to feel when going away for a night or two. I had so much fun.
This particular B&B was a sheep farm. That's right with the big old Dorset sheep and the border collie to go with it. There was a beautiful pond and we even got served dessert the night we arrived before going to bed. In the morning we had an amazing breakfast including fresh juice and fruit as well as an assortment of pastries, french toast, baked omlette, and I can't even remember what else.
If you have never been to one, it is definitely worth a try. Don't get me wrong, I still love my hotels, but this was a whole different experience. Anyone else got input?

I used to live in rural Washington, near Mt. Rainier. B & B's were big there and there were so many bad ones. Just because you have an extra room doesn't mean that you should call yourself a B&B!
I would ask friends for referrals and if that doesn't work call the chamber of commerce or some other local travel bureau. Tell them what you want and they should be able to match you up.
Many have websites and I would feel free to contact them and check them out.
The B&B's I've stayed at serve homemade cookies in the afternoon and before dinner time they'll serve wine and beer. They have a great DVD movie collection and every morning a newspaper is delivered to your door.
I'm glad your experience at your first B&B was a good one and hope you'll stay at some others! You're right to do your research. No two B&B's are alike, which is part of the fun, and part of the problem. But because of that, you can't judge all B&B's by one experience, good or bad. Each one is unique. A good thing in my opinion!
