As many of you know, I will be celebrating my 50th birthday on July 30th. I have decided to get a tattoo of a small butterfly on my right leg just above my ankle bone. My hubby is 100% against this idea. We had a heated discussion over it just an hour ago. He said I should buy a new dress instead.
Years ago, before I met my hubby, I wanted to get a tattoo. I almost got it done on my 40th birthday. I am determined to get the butterfly tattoo on my 50th birthday. I know it will cause conflict, but it is something that is my personal decision to make.

My Sister in law has a tatoo and some of my friends. As I said, I do not judge others for getting them.
I have a tattoo (about the size of 1/4 my back) and my husband was nothing but 100% supportive of my idea. He even helped me pick out a studio from my visits.
yep, i'm a chicken!
I think you should go ahead and get your tatt! :)
Post a pic once it's healed so we can see it.
Happy early birthday!
Jennifer, the one I will choose will be small. I have seen some that really aren't very nice. But, too each his/her own.
M E, I am chicken too. But, I have wanted a butterfly tattoo for so long.
Jill, I have told my husband that I have wanted this tattoo long before I met him. My original plan was to get it done when I turned 40.
Tiffanie, I would only get one tattoo. My children have more than one. I am not one to overly adorn my body. I don't even wear much jewelry. I will be sure to post the pic!
Sue, I have thought about getting it on my shoulder, but I want to look at it without the use of mirrors.
That being said - it's a very pretty design.
Carol, good on ya for getting the tat! I will tell the hubby you said I should go ahead with it. I doubt he will agree, but it is my choice.
Michelle, I loved your hubbies tattoo. It is lovely that he chose a peacock feather to represent each one of your children.
Kellie, I really don't understand why anyone would think a tattoo makes a person less attractive. If it is one that is artistic and beautiful, it enhances your beauty.
Samantha, I agree that it is a personal decision. I have pondered this thought for many years now. I really should have had it done 10 years ago.
Hello, I know that many people regret their tattoos and have them removed. But if the tattoo is one of great beauty and meaning, it will remain a part of them.
Sarina, I have heard about people getting their tattoos removed, but it always cost way more than the tattoo and was way more painful to have removed.
decisions! He'll come around it may take time but it will happen!
Luv Mom
That was the ONLY thing that changed my mind!!! It's your body and your decision!
I personally have 9 tattoos, and one of my major issues with tattoos is the photocopy flash. Not that flash is a terrible thing, but I cannot figure out why people wish to be stamped with a brand that says "I enjoy being like everyone else." The two most disappointing tattoos are the butterfly on girls and the standard tribal or barbed wire armband on guys. I thought tattoos were s'posed to be at least in some way an outward reflection of your own individuality! I urge you to get the tattoo, but make it your own. The butterfly and the wispy design can be found 3 inches above an asscrack every 5 feet in every club within 15 miles of a college campus in any town in this country.
To give examples, I have 2 custom drawn tattoos, 4 that I designed my self, and one that I pulled off of a flash sheet, but I have had a number of tattoo artists and enthusiasts say about it that they have never seen a solid red tattoo (as the normal convention is to get the solid black). jeff p.'s picture should show you how common an idea this is.
Like I already said this is simply food for thought, and I really think you would love an original much more than a photocopy. As for your husband, ask him if he is willing to divorce you over a small scar on your ankle. If not, then maybe it's just not worth it to sweat the small stuff, and if so then he must not care that much about you anyway, in which case I suggest choosing the tattoo over him.
post scripto
For those of you who do not know, "flash" is the term for the sheets choc full of designs pasted all over the walls of the tattoo parlor, and this is how it works. Some guy (usually the artsy-fartsy type) draws a bunch of designs puts them into a 4 or 5 page collection and sells them across the country. It makes an artist's job easier, because they get practice stitching that damned barbed wire into the arm of every meathead on spring break, and make quick easy money, which means that they have more time and resource to take extra care for the thoughtful people that want something different and original.
And now for some advice: if you focus on your breathing deeply and slowly, you'll barely feel a thing... if you stare at the needle on your skin you'll feel nearly all 30-100 stabs per second (artists' preference) and you'll want to jerk and move around until you have a blob that kinda resembles a butterfly forever etched above your foot.
Denise, thank you my dear friend. I can't wait to show it off.
