Having livind in and around San Luis Obispo, CA for 17 years, it's interesting to see how it's changed over time. About 5 years ago I was convinced SLO is steadily moving in the direction Santa Barbara has moved. There are more box stores, more students, more parking meters, and higher prices on housing. Although I've been jaded towards this expansion and decrease in my pocket change, SLO has gotten more beautiful.
There are big movements right now to rebuild buildings that need retrofitting but because of the outcry that it will change the face of the city, SLO has been gutting buildings and rebuilding the inner structure and the stores within. The exterior of all of the buildings have stayed pretty much the same aside from a few huge new shopping centers. No matter how much I fight change, I tend to like it in the end. Of course the traffic is worse and the tourists are more plentiful, the variety of shops is constantly increasing.
Let me know what you think next time you visit this little sister of Santa Barbara.

Somehow, this place has always made me feel so peaceful and at home. One day, I was living in Washington State and not liking it much. I asked myself where I felt the best of all of the cities that I have lived in and it was here. It turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made!
