How The Competition Judging Will Work:
• Round 1: On August 27, the First Chapter submissions will be available for reading and voting in the First Chapters Romance group. The reading and voting period will last for three weeks, during which time members can read and rate each entry. See our new voting guidelines.
Ratings received and comments posted prior to August 27 or after September 18 will not count toward the final score. At the end of the Round 1 voting period, 25 writers will advance to the next round of competition – 15 based on the highest number of “10†ratings from Gather.com members, and 10 selected by the Gather Editorial Team.
• Round 2: The 25 semifinalists will post the 2nd chapter of their manuscripts on September 24 for a two-week reading/voting period. At the end of the voting period, 5 finalists will be announced – 3 based on the highest number of “10†ratings from Gather.com members, and 2 selected by the Gather Editorial Team.
• Round 3: The Grand Prize Judging Panel – Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster Editorial Director Maggie Crawford, Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster Editor Lauren McKenna, Borders Romance Buyer Sue Grimshaw, and Gather.com Founder & CEO, Tom Gerace – will select a Grand Prize Winner to receive a publishing contract with the Pocket Books imprint of Simon & Schuster, plus a $5000 cash advance and promotion and distribution by Borders. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on October 30, 2007.
Notes on Judging: Gather will monitor the competition for irregular voting patterns and fraud, and will disqualify votes and entrants if, in the Sponsor’s sole judgment, it is determined that the integrity or fairness of the competition has been, or could be, compromised. Entrants are eligible to vote in the competition but are expected to do so fairly and in the spirit of the competition.
The “editors’ pick†winners throughout the competition will be selected at the Gather.com Editorial Team’s discretion, and will be selected independent of member ratings and number of votes. The Editorial Team will judge entries on the criteria listed below.
All members who vote in the competition, as well as the Grand Prize judging panel, must consider the following criteria equally when judging: 1) Quality of writing (including grammar and spelling); 2) Author’s ability to engage the reader; 3) Originality of the author’s voice; 4) Potential of the finished book in the marketplace.

Like Rachael, I've been ePublished. My ePublishers are pushing print, but they're still small houses. I got all excited about the chance to break into New York...until I read that stipulation.
But heck, if the RWA (Romance Writers of America) refuses to recognize epublished authors as "published" with its newly revised rule set **grumble grumble**, how does New York (Simon & Schuster et. al.) feel about this? Because if y'all feel the same way, then I can definately overlook that snub...
LOL

I've posted a draft of a chapter of a wip on another gather site....does this make it ineligible for the competition?

Do you know whether or not Simon and Schuster's novel contest will offer Fantasy, Sci-Fi, etc. on Gather. com?
Also, if someone has a novel that could be in two genre's like a fantasy novel about a forbidden love that would also fit in as a romance novel, is the author allowed to submit to Gather.com in two categories?
Thank you
We are definitely open to working with Simon & Schuster on more genre-specific competitions, but at this time, romance is the only genre we are seeking (and it sounds like your manuscript is a fit!).
If we hold another genre-specific competition in the future, you can resubmit a manuscript you've entered in a prior First Chapters competition (provided you didn't win with that manuscript already!).
If we were to hold two genre-specific competitions simultaneously, you could participate in both only if you submit a different manuscript for each competition.
Thanks, and let me know if you have any other questions!

I work for Borders Books and Music. Does this disqualify me from entering the competition?
Thanks,
Don
You don't want us to include a short synopsis with our manuscripts like we did last time?
It's not necessary for entrants to submit a synopsis at this time - as we start to narrow down the pool we'll be asking for that info. Thanks for your question!
What is the minimum word count for this manuscript contest?
There is no minimum word count, only a maximum, which is 100,000 words. It's really up to the individual entrant as to what constitutes a "full-length manuscript" - please just keep in mind that it should be a romance novel, not a novella or short story.
I will try to check in and hope to load it before the 22nd.
Does each chapter have to be 2000- 5000 words each of the 1st to together?
Also what if you have had short stories in multiple anthologies? Disqualified?
I have a novel I think might fit but I also think I my be disqualified by one or both of these issues.
Cheers.
Congratulations on your upcoming book! If you have signed a contract with a publisher, you are ineligible for this competition. Thank you!
If you selected the First Chapters Romance Writing Group when you published your chapter, then your chapter will show up in that group on August 27, when our official reading and voting period begins. Thanks for your question!
You must join the First Chapters Romance group in order for the box to show up when you're publishing. So go to romancenovel.gather.com, and click the orange "Join this Group" button on the left side of the page. Then find your chapter and click "edit" to be able to go back and publish to the First Chapters Romance group. Thank you!
