My daughter met Eva when she was five months old.
A local shelter had cats available for adoption at a local pet supply store. There was something about her that struck a chord. My daughter had to take her home.
The term "rescued" when applied to pets means a pet that otherwise would have been subject to euthanasia. In Eva's case there was a rescue in the traditional sense of the word. A kind soul found her in a Dumpster and brought her to the shelter. She was fostered and socialized till she was ready for adoption.
Eva is a very shy cat. She's attached to her humans but spends large parts of her day in mysterious stealthy places. When she comes out she likes to sit on humans and be petted. When she grooms the humans she's obsessive. She probably doesn't understand the word "exfoliation" but in spite of that she's an expert.
Her weakness is the rubber tips on door stops. When she was about a year old she swallowed one and suffered an intestinal blockage. It required surgery. Now her humans remove the tips from door stops. Sometimes she'll sit in front of a door stop and pine.
She's six now and has humans who dote on her. It's lots better than living in a Dumpster.

"Whiskers." He's also a shy cat, but he loves living with us. He has the best of everything, like air-conditioning in hot dog days of summer. "That's a cat's life."
You're a very nice man, my friend.
BTW, Spike can't have string to play with any more. He eats pieces of it. So I understand about the door stops.
Tell your daughter thanks as well for giving Eva a home. I'm sure Eva will repay her many times over.
She is our lovey girl.
We've had a couple of cats who sucked their tails.
