It's not easy being the anchor of a sinking ship. And that could explain why Katie Couric slapped a co-worker on the arm several times last month.
According to "New York Magazine" it all started when news editor Jerry Cipriano inserted the word "sputum" into a script about the airline passenger with tuberculosis. Couric pronounced the term incorrectly (she said "sput-tom" instead "spew-tum"). After the newscast, Couric confessed to the magazine that "I sort of slapped him around." Apparently the "CBS Evening News" anchor wanted a heads up before using the word, which is used to describe saliva mixed with mucus... yuck! Couric says the two have moved on and now joke about the incident.
Still the the ratings are far from "perky" at CBS, which continues to lag far behind ABC and NBC. Couric also told "New York Magazine" that she is well aware of this "gleeful evisceration," that her "blood is in the water," that we all seem thrilled that she has finally been "put in her place."
So Gather Members is the criticism of Katie fair? If you were the head of CBS what would you do? Stay the course and back Couric, or what about a move to the morning show?
