Something's Fishy in Onekama

fileId:3096224744266180;size:inter; As Matt and I pulled into Onekama over the Fourth of July holiday, we noticed fish popping up everywhere.

Apparently several artists designed and painted them to auction for charity. (Thanks to Carol V. for this information). fileId:3096224744266181;size:inter;

They are present at most of the businesses in town.

My particular favorite. It turns shades of copper, purple and green depending on what angle you view it from.

I like your choice, too...and these are usually done for charitable causes, so I'd support them all. In my parts, we've done horses and deer in the past...with some still on display years later.

Reminds me of the charlie browns that we had around St Paul a couple of years ago.
They were all painted and auctioned off for charity.

I love these!! I saw the cows in Chicago as well, and Sarasota just had clowns. These fish are my favorite...

Okay! Here's the deal with those fish. Each one was made from a form that they had cast from an artist (not local) Then several selected area artists, including my good friend Bill Hattendorf, each got one to finish as they pleased. Bill did his with images of Petoskey stones. The fish will be auctioned off in a few weeks and the proceeds will go to the Portage Lake Watershed fund for lake restoration. Great cause. We've been doing a lot of this type of thing around Manistee County. Last year it was lighthouses in the city of Manistee.

Thank you for the information, Carol. For some reason it's pretty hush hush. My dad is the president of Onekama's council and he didn't even know much about them. But it IS a good cause, and that is the important thing!

Cool! A friend of mine lives in Longmont, CO and works in Boulder, and I remember a few years ago she sent me pictures of sculptures of geese all over Boulder, also apparently for charity. And about 10 or 15 years ago an artist did variations on Mr. Potato Head and sited them all over Rhode Island (we had one right downtown here in Newport), and they were sponsored by various people and businesses to raise money for the Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, RI.
