Trashing Your Wedding Gown

According to a recent article in Newsweek magazine, the latest in wedding customs is to destroy your wedding gown following the reception. Photographs are, of course, essential. No more paying hundreds of dollars to dubiously "preserve" a dress you will never wear again, even if it is a $10,000 Vera Wang. No taking it to consignment shops, or saving it for your daughter, or selling it on e-Bay. No - the latest thing is to have a picture of you jumping into a fountain in full white overpriced regalia, or rolling in the mud in same, or whatever other creative way you can desecrate what is perhaps the most expensive garment you will ever wear. I remember my cousin, doing the crocodile, squirm on the floor dance in her gown.

Wrecked her dress, but seemed like a good idea at the time.

Personally I am saving my wedding gown for my daughter. Now whether she will wear it or not is up to her but at least she will have that option. I wasnt aware of this. Interesting article.

Not only is it the most expensive garment you will ever wear, but for only one day or maybe 6 hours at the most.

I hope this is just a passing "fad" and does not become a "custom" ..... what a shame to destroy your wedding gown ..... and for what purpose?

I would never want to do that! When I get married I plan on preserving my gown as a memory of the day!
My mom made over her wedding gown into numerous Halloween costumes for me -- fairy princess, Mother Nature, bride. I loved them all.

Heh... my wife's wedding dress was casual, comfortable clothes. Buying a super-expensive gown and then wrecking it... bah.

I don't plan on having children to give my wedding dress too... I don't think I could resell it, and it wasn't that expensive in the first place. Therefore, I will probably end up throwing mine away sometime anyway... maybe this would have been a good idea :)

My mother made my wedding dress, and if my daughter wishes, she may wear it. It's much prettier than the froufrou stuff you see these days. Mom covered about a hundred buttons with white satin, and made the loops for each one. It's simple and elegant, and I love it. No way would I trash it.

I bet the fathers who paid for those dresses were ready to pull their hair out!!!!!

I couldn't do that to my dress. Admittedly it's just sitting preserved in a box as is my mom's but no way could I do something destructive to it.

I hope they put more thought into their marriages than this. Not that I revere The Wedding Dress as a sacred garment, because too many people focus more on the wedding day than the marriage.

I still have my expensive wedding dress....that marriage didn't last but I would NEVER consider trashing it. My second dress was ALOT cheaper and I wore it for years before I gave it away BTW...it was just an ordinary ivory dress suit .

I ruined my wedding dress, however, it was cathartic after my divorce....

Gwen: I can imagine how good that must have felt.

Sarah: reselling makes sense.

Jerri: sometimes the gown is worth more than the marriage, and it was smart to recognize this.

LL: yes. Sad that materialism rules these extravagant ceremonies, and that Bridezilla has become such a commonplace term in our culture. I can only imagine the hell it must be to live with these "me, me, me" women - who could stand it "till death do us part?" I'd say divorce is the better option.
