"To eat bread without hope is still slowly to starve to death"
Pearl S. Buck
My Favorite Cook (Villanell)
She wasn't Emeril, Ming or Nigella
didn't cook cappelletti, paella, or duxelles
But she cooked from her heart, my Gramella
She served cheddar insteada mozzarella
Button mushrooms and not chanterelles
She wasn't Emeril, Ming or Nigella
She occasionally minced mortadella
with onions and peas from their shells
And she cooked from her heart, my Gramella
For dessert we liked toast with Nutella
Or tarts with her caramelled apples
She wasn't Emeril, Ming or Nigella
She put up bottled fruit in her cellar
Jams, jellies, pears, peaches and pickles
And she cooked from her heart, my Gramella
Her guests never suffered salmonella
and the eggs never had bits of shell
She wasn't Emeril, Ming or Nigella
But she cooked from her heart, my Gramella
