Gather Mail--aaargh!

I can certainly understand your frustration, because I can't stand that kind of stuff in my regular email. I don't get that much on Gather, and I have only sent out one when it was a crisis situation in my hometown and I was requesting prayer. Other than that, I dount do it. I have seen a few that I understood, and since I don't get it, I guess it hasn't bothered me here. I hope your contact list will respect your wishes...

This is wildly ironic. I'm with you 100%, but today the only mass email in my inbox was from YOU saying exactly what this article says, and since I'm connected to you I already had an announcement of this article.

Are you being cleverly post modernly self referential? Because if you aren't I'd make the same request of you - please don't send me mass emails.

Yep. I hate those mass emails almost as much as I hate alerts to things being posted to my groups that are totally Off Topic and a waste of my time to have to go read and then kick out...

Sometimes a pain and irritating, but not that big of a deal. Takes me only seconds to decide to read or delete, especially if I recognize the title and sender as being something I've already been notified of being published. I don't mind as sometimes, an explaination of the post has made me go back and read something that now interested me that I skipped over scanning what my notifications were about.

Hon, you submitted this to at least one group that I moderate. You need to read the group descriptions of moderated groups before you publish to them. It is very annoying. If you want to promote that people be nice, you should be polite when publishing to groups. We who moderate groups (and there are a lot of us) are wasting a lot of time when declining off topic articles sent to the groups we moderate.

People who post their articles to ALL their groups are very annoying.

I wish that the e-mail notification process could be more selective. I get annoyed when people send me Gather mail about the article they just published because I know that I am going to me e-mailed about it anyhow -- several times in fact. I am notified that person x has published an article ands then the several groups have all published the same article. Looking at the impressive list of groups some people belong to there is the potential that I could get an entire page of e-mails devoted to one article. Evidently some people think that Gather is a numbers game.

I dislike the SPAM and won't read it ever. If I do not see my name in the To: field I delete the message unread. If I want to view your photographs or read what you've written, then I will do so.

There is a difference between selectively mailing and mass mailing. Its not hard to figure out.

Jack, if you go into your settings, you can modify all that.... I got rid of group notices (all but for my own groups) first thing.

I DID see the irony in what I did by e-mailing everyone. I am a relatively aware person. I have only twice sent out a mass e-mail, and only once did I post to all my groups. I am VERY aware of how annoying it is. This was my attempt to "help" others gain such awareness. Love and Peace to all.

I'm not bothered too much by mass emails, but then, I'm not in a lot of groups and don't have a lot of connections. I think that might have something to do with it.

I have only received a few mass mailings and I only do it to my groups once in awhile. I have just begun a moderated group and invited others to join it and I have posted info regarding a very popular former member's new web page. Then I saw that he did it again (much better job than I did, but I asked him not to do so again. As I've said before, it's hard to keep track of what group wants what, so I have narrowed down my groups. It's also difficult to view everything that is for me.
Hence, I agree with what you are saying, Ann, but as someone suggested above--just delete it.

Ann, just block the connections who you feel send you too much gather mail. This should solve the problem and then you will still get the important mail you want to read. I have been pointed to many interesting articles through gather mail from my connections that I otherwise would have missed because they were posted by people who were not connections of mine and/or posted to groups I am not a member of.

Almost as annoying, also, as people who condescend to addressing other people by 'Hon'

I automatically block the sender of all mass mailings to me. I just will not have it.

Thanks for the advice on blocking mass mailings. I'll start using that right away and see what happens.

Ann, as others said, most people have their connections notifications turned off--they do not receive any email telling them that their connections published something. This is now actually the default setting. For groups, you only get notifications if you request this by checking the group. People know this, and this is why they send mass emails. I agree that it's annoying if someone does this all the time, but the occasional mass email about something the person considers to be of special importance is fine. And I'm saying this even though I have never sent a mass email. I can, however, imagine situations where I might consider doing so, and I have also received such emails from connections that I was glad to get, because they called my attention to something that I would otherwise have missed.

I think the best thing to do is to turn off your "notify me if my friends, etc do such and such" notifications, and instead subscribe to the people you would really like to be notified about. (Here the default is also no notification, so you need to go to settings and check each name separately after you've "subscribed" to them.) This works well in terms of avoiding getting a hundred emails in one day. And if there's someone who's mass mailing you every day, the first thing to do would be to disconnect from them. If they still keep you on their mailing list, then you could consider blocking them--I haven't yet done this with anyone. :-)

Yes, most mass mails are are nothing but an irritent.

So many of you have Gather-mailed me with positive sentiments, it is amazing.

So that there is no confusion, I am not talking about the e-mails that Gather generates, but rather the GatherMail feature that we have here.

I narrowed down my groups because it's hard to remember whom to send what to.
This post is more of a rant. Fit for carerants (new group). Outofourshellskindred nuts is for funny stuff. But I understand . . . it's hard (out here for a nut ;])

Yes, I too do not appreciate the mass emails and the postings that have nothing to do with a specific blog...I expect to read about someone's spirutual quest or latest opinion on politics and instead I'm reading someone's recipe for potato salad?!?!?!?! C'mon, please, let's post it where it belongs then I know what I'm getting into. Thanks.

good article and I still say Hon is not meant to be condecending all the time. Sometimes that is just a standard greeting.
