SUSAN B: 1986 EXPO VANCOUVER TRIP

Hello 'PHOTO PARADE' members and anyone else who might happen upon this article.

In honor of Canada Day eh, I am proud to present my PHOTO PARADE- Susan B: 1986 EXPO Vancouver Trip! This was a trip that The Househusband, another couple and I made to EXPO '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Our friends had an RV which we drove up and parked in a lot for campers across the street from this World's Fair. It worked out to about $25 a night for the four of us after the exchange rate. The theme of the fair was communication and transportation and we saw nearly every type of transportation known to man. There were pedi-cabs to take us from our RV to the park, a paddle wheel boat, aerial tram, experimental vehicles, a Russian spacecraft, elevated trains, and sculptures made with cars and other vehicles. We were fortunate to be there for both Canada Day and the 4^th of July and though they did the same fireworks show each night, we pretended that the one on the 4^th was just for us from America.

We bought the tickets in November of 1985 and I got pregnant in January, 1986, so we arrived at the fair with its long lines and muggy heat just in time for my ankles to swell. The only part that really bummed me out was that the only ride I was allowed on in the amusement park was the carousel. I do like carousels, but it was the ONLY thing I could ride. My favorite pavillions to visit were the ones for Australia, Prince Edward Island, and Canada, because there was a long air-conditioned show with places to sit down. We stood in line for three hours to see the hologram show of a First Nations man telling stories at a campfire in front of a teepee put on by General Motors. Ten years later we found this same exhibit relocated along with several of the amusement park rides at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Vista, California (near Disneyland).
