This Independence Day, patriots around the nation will find a number of ways to celebrate freedom. If you like reading and writing, here’s the perfect way for you to get your patriotic groove on: check out the first installment of my short story, “Freedom,” as published in Coloquio.
“Freedom” is the story of an American soldier who is conflicted about his service in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is being serialized in Coliquio, an online magazine that boasts seven million hits a year. There are 12 installments in all.
“Freedom" is a story from TRACKS, my novel in stories. TRACKS takes place on an Amtrak train traveling from Baltimore to Chicago.
Some readers at Gather may remember reading the opening episodes of “Freedom.” It’s not deja’vu. Toward the beginning of the year, I began sharing “Freedom” at Gather.
Then, before entering the Gather First Chapters Writing Competiton with TRACKS, my novel in stories, I took down all excerpts from TRACKS to comply with the contest guidelines.
Now that the contest is over, I’d like to share the published story from beginning to end.
Enjoy this opening installment at the link below — and happy Fourth of July!

Liz, since I originally had to delete the posts that included excerpts from TRACKS, I don't remember how far along it went. I think I linked to the first four or so installments before the contest. Then, before entering, I deleted them. Now, I'm reposting them. Above is the link to the first installment. The installments are short, for online readers. I believe I'll post the link to one installment each week. Only one installment remains to be published in Coloquio, so by the time we get to week 12, the last monthly installment will be published and available. Thanks for your interest!
And a question: In the future, would it be easier if I actually posted the installment as an article instead of linking to it? Since these have been published already in Coloquio and I retain the copyright, I'd be allowed to do so.
And yes it would be better to see the article on gather in future (But please also provide a link to it, so that we can also check out how it sits on the magazine itself. :) )
Excellent work.
