Heading to Mount Rushmore this summer? Make sure you budget for parking. Although admission to the monument is free, ALL parking near the national monument is sub-contracted to a private concern, and unless you are willing to fork over $4 for parking, you can't get close. Go towards Harney Peak and Sylvan Lake- much more beautiful place than heads in stone- God is a better creator.

I find it interesting that a parking space is about one half the daily cost of leasing a compact car on a three year contract. also about a third of the cost of carpeting the same area occupied by the car. I wonder how they justify the price.

Shoooooot! In downtown Detroit you have to pay at least $4 to park and still have a ways to walk to get to your destination to some man-made attractions. On a special event night. . .$40 and you still have to walk!

My complaint is that there is not supposed to be any entrance fee to this National Monument. And there isn't one—as long as you walk, which is impossible. Therefore, there is a de facto fee, which goes to a private company. WTF?

You are probably right, Ann--it sounds like a way to get around the no entrance fee rule and still give someone's good friend or cousin a nice contract. But I still had to smile at your description of the $4 parking fee as highway robbery. I would not recommend then that you come to San Francisco and bring your car along, or rent one while here.... :-)
