MOSCOW, July 1 (Itar-Tass) - A new region ? the Kamchatka territory ? appears on Russia?s map on Sunday. It is a merger of the Kamchatka region and the Koryak autonomous district. The overwhelming majority of residents voted for this step at the referendum of October 23, 2005. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the relevant law on July 13, 2006. On Monday, the first governor of the Kamchatka territory, Alexei Kuzmitsky, proposed by the president, will be sworn into office. |
