New merged region appears on Russia?s map.

MOSCOW, July 1 (Itar-Tass) - A new region ? the Kamchatka territory ? appears on Russia?s map on Sunday. It is a merger of the Kamchatka region and the Koryak autonomous district.

The overwhelming majority of residents voted for this step at the referendum of October 23, 2005. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the relevant law on July 13, 2006.

On Monday, the first governor of the Kamchatka territory, Alexei Kuzmitsky, proposed by the president, will be sworn into office.

There is probably more gold in that area than in the rest of the world combined. The problem is digging it.

All the time I spent memorizing maps in geography classes in college - what a waste...... I doubt any are even close to the same, except maybe North America.

That's the closest I could find for Kamchatskiy Krai ("terrirory". as opposed to oblast - "region") It's now #41 on this map.

I find it interesting that their flag has three volcanoes on it.
