Have you ever created a 'zine? Zines are little self-published booklets on a variety of topics.
Once upon a long time ago, I wrote a lit 'zine called Electric Mandolin. It had a whole bunch of folks contributing poems, stories, art and the like. I had high hopes for continuing to publish it... but the cost of printing turned out to be such that it wasn't really cost effective.
Now I've considered trying again a time or two over the years, but never really got around to it. I found out about this challenge from my friend Rick's page - he's planning on participating in it. Rick puts out a quarterly 'zine called Caravan, which means he's already infinately more successful at this than I am.
Still - why not try again? The 24 Hour Zine thing challenges you to make a 'zine in 24 hours! 24 hours to make a 'zine with 24 pages sounds like a fun challenge. I have decided to try making one that is a series of character studies.
I will include stories about some of my favorite characters, and some of the stories that I have just snippets of at the moment I will expand upon. I will even write up a new character or two, I'm sure! If you keep up with my writings, you are sure to recognize some of the characters - Michael, Matty, Ambria, Grant, and Avon - maybe some of my roleplaying characters as well.
If you were going to write a 'zine, what would you write about?

The pages can be any size you want. I'm planning on going with 24 half-sheets because I'll be doing most of my layout on computer, so that size will make it easier to work with while not being unmanageable.
My regular zine, Caravan (which is quarterly, not monthly; although I appreciate L's optimistic opinion of my abilities!) is usually 6-8 full-size pages. It's in this format because I submit it to an APA, a sort of compilation zine that is assembled from different zinesters around the country and the collected whole is then mailed out to the members.
Good luck to everyone who's interested in trying this out!
Good luck to everyone embarking on this!
I did a few others - one about my (now long gone) sword collection and another about advisory councils and boards of directors. They're so cheap to print and assemble that it's not too hard to make a little money that way.
One is on Paranormal, Strange Things w/ Myths and Legends and the other, which is one I started myself, called Sunday Giggles and Some Other Stuff.
But I don't print them out. I have an online readership. Used to go to about 4000 people but believe am around 1500-2000 now.
I do the Sunday Giggles weekly (most weeks anyway) and the other one monthly (about). Sometimes life gets in the way and I get slow/lazy. But everyone seems to love them. I have several who let me know when they are late!!!
How do you subscribe to those? I'd like to read them.
