Thanks to hail, lighning, and heavy rain from... SPACE... I was locked out of anything electrical most of today. The skies are growing dark again as I type this, and the rumble of the goddess rolls across the Great Plains outside my window. Coincidence? I think not. At least it wouldn't be coincidence in Star Trek...
I wrote a special funny story called "Chewbacca Rides Shotgun" for today, and as I was finishing it, the lights went out as a transformer blew. I just realized that it blew my story - my document returns a fatal error when I try to open it. I will do some diagnostics and see if I can get the dang thing to work. If not, a rewrite is in order! It's too funny a true story not to tell.
I will be leaving my mark on everyone's contributions, so please don't fret if I haven't visited or commented on your article yet. Due to the power outage, I am woefully behind, and this evening I am live-blogging the Democratic Forum for PBS and Gather. (Check out my Gather space for the live blog at 9 p.m. Eastern.)
In the meantime, please check out these wonderful articles featured today:
Jennifer Hodge, Gather employee and kind-hearted Wonder Woman, stood in for me this morning and featured:
Surviving the Ivory Tower Jungle by Rose W.
Rose's memoir of being a non-traditional student will give you a feeling of empowerment, and will make you want to stand up and applaud for Rose!
Ed Nudelman, poet, Gather Correspondent, and Friday Writing Essential Editor held down the fort this afternoon. He featured:
A Clockwork Orange County by Charles Lennox IV
Charles writes in a frantic yet completely elegant and wondrous style. Read his account of a checkout line gone... well, regular. Every checkout line I attend is much the same way. It's a funny and amazing read!
And my pick this evening, is a bit on the dark and sci-fi side:
Dilemma by Erin F.
Erin crafts a short sci-fi thriller with a surprise ending that caught me off-guard. I don't want to give too much away!
Other articles you won't want to miss:
The Hieroglyphs of Hiegle Passage by Tracey W.
A poem with a twist!
How to Give and Take Critique by Corey B.
EVERY writer should read this article about giving and taking critique. A wonderful essay.
Next Thursday:
July 5 - A Matter of Principle
I'm looking for stories and articles that explore ethics. Ideas: Post a tale of the time you stood up to a bully, the story of how you decided to finally go through with that divorce, a sketch of a lawyer faced with defending a man he knows is guilty of murder, an essay on the place and nature of truth in fiction
Thanks, all you lovely Space beings! See you next Thursday in the Writing Essential!

We are controlling transmission.
If we wish to make it stranger, we will bring up the insanity.
If we wish to make it sweeter, we will introduce chipmunks, with knives....
We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical.
We can make the heart flutter.
We can change the focus of the story from a soft blur to crystal clarity.
For the next browsing sit quietly and we will control all that you see.
We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your monitor.
You are about to participate in a great adventure.
You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Birdie Zone!"
