OK here is my dilema. My baby is almost a year old now. And I have been fighting that whole time to get here Social Security Card.
Here is my story.
Our daughter was born in Florida. When she was a month old we moved to Iowa. I called the Social Security office in Ocala, Florida and requested they forward on her card to our address in Iowa. I have called every month since last September. They always told me a number has been issued to her. I wait and wait. I had to file an extension on my taxes because of this.
Then I get ahold of the local office here in Iowa they send me a form which I fill out and send back in with her birth certificate. Another month goes by. Then I get a letter in the mail along with her birth certificate stating I need to go into the local office.
I went today.
I was told a government issued birth certificate isn't a proper form of ID to be able to get a copy of her SSN.
What is acceptable: hospital immunization records, a passport, an insurance card (which by the way you cannot get without a SSN) now realize I had the baby with me. But apparently she isn't proper proof.
Then my niece tells me that a gal she works with is illegal and for $500.00 she bought herself an identity.
I am thinking spending $500.00 is sounding better and better.

So I don't think it is one sided there. You're having troubles getting a card for your baby, I keep finding out I'm dead?
LOL
Jessie she was the supervisor.
Julie I too thought that a birth certificate would work it does to get a passport but not an ssn.
Dan that is funny and not funny...do they take your word for it when you show up not dead or do they need proof? And my daughter was born in 2006 during bush's reign so she doesnt hold up to your theory.
Joe aint that the truth.
I don't think you understood my point there. What I meant was that it gets screwed up under both sides not just under one side. They did changes during Carter, and I was listed as dead, and then they did changes again under Clinton, and I again was listed as dead, in both cases, there was a lot of people that went through this.
And no, I had to have three people varify I was who I said I was to be relistwed as alive.
Thanks Cyndi. I am getting it resolved I just got a copy from the doctors office of her immunization card. Part of the problem I didnt explain is I have to drive over 50 miles to the local SS office.
So hopefully she will have her card in a couple of weeks.
Also you might consider contacting your local Legal/Lawyer's Reference Service. The one here used to include a free telephone consultation do determine if you really needed a lawyer or merely the knowledge to proceed on your own without one.

expedite your receipt of the number for your daughter. Just explain the situation,
the hospital made the application with your Fl. address. You moved before the card
was mailed and never received it. I think if you provide the info, date of birth, hospital and if you can get it, when the hospital application was sent; then, Florida
will be able to see a number was issued and send the replacement to your new
address.
I know it sounds complicated, but it's a lot cheaper than $500. I worked in public
service for over 25 years, and there is a lot of red tape, not just for the consumer.
Public service workers have hoops to jump through every day just dealing with other government offices. Every document going into an office by mail, fax or in person has to be dated day received. And subsequent actions must be completed
within each offices time frames.
I really don't think reapplying for a new number will do anything but cause problems
for your daughter in the future, when she enters school, gets employment, gets a marriage license, ad infinitum. Everytime her information is entered into Federal, State, or County systems and they come up with 2 social security numbers for her,
she will be dealing with a situation like the one you are in now.
You'd think with all the spying the government supposedly does on us, it'd be easier to get an identity card. Or that the government'd just offer a $500 expedited service for those who are sick of the red tape, with those who use it being put on a government watchlist immediately. Everyone's happy, right? ::ducks::
