Immigration Debate: Free Speech or Creating a Hostile Environment To Immigrants (Legal & Illegal)

i think that we should pass this law. if we dont then it shows how much of a close minded country we are. They need help just like we do, and we can do it so why not. The immigrants are pratically 90% of our job laborers. Who takes care of our kids? Who does the landscaping? Who sells us our food? Who picks our food? come on world. This is one great opportunity to help out our neighboring country that needs our help. I only wish that people were not so close minded.

Good for you, Melissa. People don't seem to see that we've always accommodated different languages as new immigrants arrived. I live in MN where German and Scandinavian languages were used in schools when those nationalities were the primary immigrants.

Of course we need immigrants to learn English, but we don't have to be so unwelcoming. And isn't it funny that half the world speaks English as a second language but in our country we think being multi-lingual is unnecessary? I sure wish I could speak other languages and respond to new immigrants in their native tongue.

If we keep on track of the issue and problems created by illegal immigration than we can come up with a solution. But once we side track and delve into bigotry and racist cess pool that is intolerance, then we just add to the problem. This song is the perfect example of the idiocy that adds to problem of illegal immigration.

One language, one loyalty. A common and unifying force. And the Mexicans become more like the native Americans. I grew up where the Polish immigrants had a couple of schools where they often spoke Polish to their students. These were private schools and somehow they kept their native language. But, they all spoke English, too. The older people, no, not always. Not if they arrived say, at thirty years old, were mothers home with their kids and who stayed within a limited type of life. Limited. And for the Mexicans coming here by the illegal millions, it's not surprising that they can also break the path to citizenship laws by not learning English, too. But, that's not the real problem here. It's that Americans will become impoverized due to unfair competition; and lose what standard of living we have. We can't take care of all these people. Many have very little education. they will need to be cared for by public funds after they no longer can work. Watch Lou Dobbs Tonight on CNN. He is married to an American Mexican woman, and is very concerned about our borders and about illegal immigration. We are being swamped here, and our past way of life will be gone before we know it if this amnesty bill passes. We're being had, folks!

There's only one problem, Harold. The bill is over 400 pages and there's no proof most of the senators have even read it. Most have admitted that they haven't had time to review it thoroughly (even the ones in support of it) and that they aren't even being allowed to debate it.

So, what legitimate reason would there be to rush it through. Why not debate? Why not study the economic impact of it? It takes me longer to buy a car that it's taken them to decide what's best for our country.

By the way, Harold. Many of these illegal immigrants are hard working individuals, but there quite a few criminals, also. If you aren't allowed to arrest or deport those - wouldn't that be amnesty. Or, if they're willing to manicure the lawn - is that enough for citizenship.

Just because there are people who are from other countries who come here to live does not mean that they should give up their customs and laguage. Some countries can't afford to teach other laguages to their students so even if they do learn some of our laguage it doesn't mean that they understand all that they learn. This song is offensive, but everyone has the right to free speach, even the immigrants who have a hard time grasping the english language. So yes they should keep giving information to everyone even in their native language. My opinion of the song is that it is crap, and should be treated as such, but that is just my opinion.

When I was in my thirties I worked for a roofing company. 2 years, no overtime, no holiday pay, no insurance, $4.50 an hour. Most of my co-workers either were 'separated' from their wives who collected ADC or sold dope on the side to help make ends meet. I was lucky. I play guitar and could earn more in 2 Fri and Sat. night than by working 40 hours. Now, I hear about work 'Americans' won't do. There's a crew down the block working right now. When I left that roofing company it wasn't because I didn't want to do the work. It was because I could not make a living. Neither can they. This is not about racism or bigotry. It is about a government that nearly 6 years after the tragic events of 9-11 still thinks the war on terror is only "over there". I fear for our safety, I fear for our way of life. If those who think this amnesty...and yes it is amnesty...is the right thing to do they do not live in the real world. It is not "moral high ground". It is stupidity....

And by the way. About 20 miles northwest of River City is a little town called Joice. I spent some time working there in the early 70's. A lot of the older residents spoke with a strong Norwiegen accent. In the early years of the 20th century there were a lot of immigrant just arriving from the old country. Wanting to educate their children who didn't speak English they started their own school...in Norwiegen. Thing is, they paid for this BY THEMSELVES.. When there no longer was a need for this school, they closed it.

Problem with the illegal invasion from Mexico is they are not paying for their own teachers. We are. They do not pay for their medical, we do. Even the hardworking ones. Because by and large it is an uneducated, poverty sticken population arriving here.
