This is funny to me. Autism has been linked to bigger heads in boys. Not enough autistic girls were registered to link them to big headedness.
I haven't ever mentioned this on here but, my oldest daughter "Monkey" has autism. She is not "autistic" in the sense that most people think of Autistic people. She is no Rainman. She is just herself. She has friends, interests, she is not unaffectionate (maybe a bit overly so LOL). Some of her friends know, some don't depending on who she wants to know. I don't bother writing it down on her applications for camps or activities anymore.

What she has is more like Asperger's which is classified as Autism or Autistic Disorder. When she was younger she may have have been classified as classicly autistic, in certain stages of development anyway. There are some things "experts" have said she would never be able to do and yet she does them. A typical preteen yet "atypical".
Monkey has her own website if you are interested: The Brave Monkey
As for big headedness, yes she does have some of that LOL, but head circumference? Hers was always on the small side.

I'm a new member just joined today June 24, 2007. Your comment caught my attention. I have two children a son and daughter my son is 15yrs and my daughter will be 2 on July 18, 2007. My concern is with my daughter. It's funny you say that about the head being big because my daughter has a nice size head but it fits her body so to look at her you wouldn't say "gee that little girl has a big head. I guess what I saying is in may I went to see a developmental speacilist because my daughter is not walking and she will be two. She was born with both her feet turned outward like a "duck" the left foot more than the right. Even though she was able to straigthen her feet on her own when she felt like it. I was referred to a foot specialist and he decided to cast both her feet up to her thighs to keep her feet in positioned in the normal position this was done when she was four months old the had 3 castings done in 7-day intervals. The foot doctor felt confident this would help. As she approched 15 months and still wasn't walking I started to worry I mentioned to her Pedi- and she said not to worry she fine. The foot doctor said same thing give her until she 18 months she'll be walking "not to worry" During this time when she would stand her feet still didn't look right. 18 months came and went and my daughter still was not walking. Because she seemed to be standing on the sides of her feet when she stood I took her back to the Foot Doctor and he said her feet had nothing to do with why she wasn't walking he ended up refering me to the developmental specialist. May 25 was my appointment and I don't think I will ever forget that day. I felt like somebody punched me in the stomach and knocked the wind out of me. He said my daughter's brain was not in sync with her age developmental wise she was more like 12 months. I sorry for rambling on giving you my life's story. Your comment caught my eye because he never used the words autistic or autism for that matter. And now I am wondering all her large motor skills she was late but her pediatrican kept saying don't worry she doing fine but I couldn't help but worry because i started going back 15 years ago when my son was her age and their was a huge difference. I know your not suppose to compare every child developes differently but I couldn't help it. It never occured to me something was wrong. Brain wise. Autistic and Autism you mentioned their is a difference? You also mentioned "experts" said there was things she would never do and she's proved them to be wrong. This gives me so much hope, thank you. The "expert" I went too never diagnoised my daughter as having autism he said her brain was developmenting slower than it should be and he didn't have a name for it when I asked him straight up I said are you saying my daughter has some form of autism he said no.
Did they mention PDD-NOS? Pervasive Developmental Disorder Non-specific. It just really means "Ongoing Developmental Disorder or Delays".
dd walked at 15 almost 16m, sat at 10m,crawled at 11m. Didn't eat consistently until 3 1/2. Tongue/mouth paralysis on one side. Now her delays are mostly social skill related, a few fine motor, and she does have "autistic like" hand flapping when excited and a few tics.
She is almost 10, going into 5th grade. The few people that know about her autism or find out usually say "Wow, you can't even tell!" . She chooses to tell people she wants to tell. She is getting into the My parents are so embarrassing stage LOL so I try to only bring it up when people are talking about autism or to explain her flapping.
Both are also quite tiny so I think their heads go well with their bodies!
