FURRY MISSILES

    Just a quick question for those who may know,cuz I sure as heck don't. Do raccoons fall? I mean,if they aren't sick or anything. I was uploading an image a few minutes ago and caught a glimpse of fur falling,then a *THUD*. At the bottom of the tree in my yard was a HUGE raccoon lying on the ground. I thought it was a cat at first,but when it stood,and I had a clearer look,I saw the telltale circles around the eyes and the adorable stubby legs and paws. It took a few moments to compose itself,then headed back up the tree. I told the neighbors about it,because they have two small dogs and a young child,but I just don't know if falling is something unusual for these critters. Anybody know?

I don't know the answer but that sure is interesting. You could call your local extension service or Animal Control Office and I'm sure they could answer this. It being the weekend, I'm sure someone on Gather will know. I'm curious now.

This happened 5 minutes after the ACO's office closed. I may have to call the police if it becomes an issue. I will run across the street and tell them because I just saw their grandchildren arrive.

Now all the neighbors are under alert and the furball is curled up in a crook.
How he doesn't have internal injuries is beyond me.

We have a lot of raccoons around Tahoe.
I have never seen one climb way up in a
tree. There raccoons along the Front
Range in CO too, never saw one in a tree.
All these raccoons scurried around on the
ground and lived in burrows like badgers
and woodchucks. Not being a cat nor a
squirrel, it probably knocked the stuffing
out of itself falling out of the tree!

No kidding. This thing is at least 50 feet up in my 150 year old oak! No branches lower than probably 40 or so feet cuz I just got them pruned. Mind boggling.

hmmmmm never seen one fall...but then it has been rare when I've ever seen one except for those rare camping days.

We didn't have raccoons in any of the places where I spent much time growing up. So, nope.
