orphans

Seeing the naked boys

tied to their beds

abandoned

by their brothers.

One image stood out:

The handsome blond American soldier

giving water to a thirsty naked orphan.

Feeling happy that the orphan had been found

his life saved moments before a certain death

then i thought sadly about how many orphans have filled the land

the land without borders

where there are only

people with and without

a friend,

with and without a life,

orphans ,

and no where a father

to protect

or guide.

There is always one image from our horrific wars which stay in our memories; the pics of the Christmas "time out" truce football game during WWII, the flag raising during WWII, the child burning with the napalm we dropped during the Vietnam "conflict," the horror of the black days when Sadaam set fire to the oil fields in Kuwait during the Gulf War, and now this one. Thanks for setting it to poetry. A very touching glimpse of our occupation in Iraq.
