How Do I find music for my 7 year old?

she's a bit beyond the typical "children's songs" and more into the teen idol sort of stage. So, looking more for the type of music younger teens listen to (11-14 year range). Nothing with questionable lyrics, or anything inappropriate (language, suggestion, etc). Just clean music that she can "rock" to!!

I'd say check out the Disney channel on the radio or television...

will check some of these out. She's discovered Weird Al already, and although she is allowed to listen to some of his, most of it is off limits due to language.

I might add that she is going into the third grade, so past the ABC stage and all that.

The Music of Vince Guaraldi...of Charlie Brown (PEANUTS) fame. You should also introduce her to classical music...Mozart, for instance, and Debussy...ballet music, like Fantasia, Peter and the Wolf, Cinderella, The Nutcracker Suite, etc. Get her some classical culture before she gets assaulted by rap and crap which is what modern American music pretty much amounts to. Introduce her to great American music like Porgy and Bess, Carousel, Annie, etc. there's really good stuff...it's not all Elton John/Bernie Turpin tripe. British musicals...Oliver, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady. Check out these links:

I do appreciate your concern, however if you read in my above post you will see that I do NOT allow anything with suggestive phrases, or cuss words or anything of that nature.

Everything she listens to, I always listen to first. Trust me, I am an extremely overprotective parent. Everything that she listens to so far comes from the Disney Channel or NickJR. She had to beg and beg for me to let her listen to the Naked Brothers Band, simply because I didn't like their use of "Naked" in their band name... (and still don't quite understand that choice)...lol

I just wanted opinions of other songs or groups that would be entertaining to her that were clean and wholesome and what I meant by "she is beyond kid's songs" is simply that she already knows her ABC's and has sung to death "Old McDonald...and so forth"....

I do know how you mean about the other type of music out there and I too agree that some of it is very inappropriate for young kids, heck...even for some adults! I even screen the ringtones my stepdaughter gets on her phone. She thinks I'm nuts...lol, but that's okay by me! (Hazelnut)

Felix, I did download some broadway hits, and love love the suggestions you gave and will be adding some of those for certain! Thank you for that, exactly what I was seeking.

I second the They Might Be Giants - they have some great kid-friendly songs.

hazel - lillie listens to so many different kinds of music., she experiments with the cable music radio - do you have that, with your cable tv? (we have charter, here in MI)...she listens to so much music, and so little of it is kids music. she does like slumber party girls, but that seems so teenage-ey to me. gross. she really loves musicals, as well as funk and anything that she can sing along with. good luck! oh yes, she LOVES buble. she calls him mr bubble. haha.

My nieces love Hannah Montana and High School Musical.

I highly , let me emphesize, HIGHLY suggest slowly getting her into some oldies. That will givve her some good variety in her musical tape, and it's cool because this music is historical! For example, if she ends up liking there's alot of social history she could learn about them. Things like the kinks, the ramones, the beatles, and just really great fifties songs are SOOOOOO much fun for kids!

yeah i'd check out disney channel CD's that include artists like Emily Osment, Mitchel Musso, Raven, and Vanessa Hudgens they add new funky twists on older songs
