In his latest book, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America, former New York Times foreign correspondent Hedges takes on what he identifies as a concerted effort by the Religious Right to control America's political landscape.
Hedges, the son of a Presbyterian minister, graduated from seminary at Harvard Divinity and served as a foreign correspondent for almost 20 years. He was part of the New York Times team that won the 2002 Pulitzer for its reportage on global terrorisim. His published books include War is a Force that Gives us Meaning (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction) and Losing Moses on the Freeway: The Ten Commandments in America.
In order to consider his arguments, it is important to understand what Hedges means by the term "Religious Right" - and what he does not. In Chapter One of American Fascists, Hedges distinguishes Christians, persons of faith and traditional evangelicals from the neo-con dominionist evangelicals who he warns are seeking to subvert democracy. It is the latter who fall under his definition of the Religious Right.
In ten easy-to-read intelligent chapters, Hedges breaks down elements of fascism as methods employed by the Religious Right ranging from the institution of a "Culture of Despair" to the promulgation of wealth as a path to righteousness for "The New Class." His is an impassioned request of people of all faith and no faith to think about how the loss of democracy could impregnate our government under the guise of Christianity, and to take a deeper look at how the Religious Right operates. As someone who has participated in their conferences, healings, educational programs and more, he offers facts and insights that support his argument.
This book is not one that merely preaches to the proverbial choir but rather exposes some lesser known truths and tactics and begs the reader's attention. Hedges writes:
"Dr. James Luther Adams, my ethics professor at Harvard Divinity School, told his students that when we were his age—he was then close to 80—we would all be fighting the “Christian fascists.”
He was not a man to use the word fascist lightly. He had been in Germany in 1935 and 1936 and worked with the underground anti-Nazi church, known as the Confessing Church, led by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Adams was eventually detained and interrogated by the Gestapo, who suggested he might want to consider returning to the United States. It was a suggestion he followed. He left on a night train with framed portraits of Adolf Hitler placed over the contents of his suitcases to hide the rolls of home-movie film he had taken of the so-called German Christian Church, which was pro-Nazi, and the few individuals who defied the Nazis, including the theologians Karl Barth and Albert Schweitzer. The ruse worked when the border police lifted the tops of the suitcases, saw the portraits of the Führer and closed them up again. I watched hours of the grainy black-and-white films as he narrated in his apartment in Cambridge.
Adams saw in the Christian right, long before we did, disturbing similarities with the German Christian Church and the Nazi Party, similarities that he said would, in the event of prolonged social instability or a national crisis, see American fascists rise under the guise of religion to dismantle the open society. He despaired of U.S. liberals, who, he said, as in Nazi Germany, mouthed silly platitudes about dialogue and inclusiveness that made them ineffectual and impotent..."
As the chapters in this book each deserve their own conversation I will try to offer more details in future articles.

I'm glad to see others joining in. Exposure is necessary to even attempt to understand what some in the Christian Right are doing to the Constitution and the Justice systems in this country.
Oh, well. Whatever will we do to the 'Rouge Countries' of this earth that we live on.
Thank you for this review. Very well written, and on a very important topic.
Liz, Two very good clarifications on those definitions...
I found a copy of the book a couple years ago, but haven't had the heart to go back into it. After reading your review, I would tackle Chris Hedges, though. I read his book on war and found it well done, albeit a tough subject.

You'll be surprised to see how far nazi connectiones can really go. This is only a fraction of it that i'm putting up right here, theres a lot more that suggests the same as the stuff below & so much more i couldnt even begin to talk about:

Any idea about who's running the US?? Any idea about who is running this plannet? I know what your thinking, but the documentation is clear cut evidence of this & it goes back a long way. Theres a whole lot more documented information about this & you'll be surprised by what you might find. There are some terribly evil people out there and unfortunately due to their tremendous power they have the ability to fool people into not recognising them for what they really are. This is a global world with global leaders, do not be fooled by what you see.
A fine review. Hedges is a first-rate investigative reporter and writer. His theological background notwithstanding, his humanistic, liberal bias mars his interpretation of the views of the different Christian churches in America. At times he gives incoherent and self-contradictory interpretations of such common terms as "faith." At one point he redefines redefines faith to mean "... not faith in magic, not faith in church doctrine or church hierarchy, but faith in simple human kindness." What does that mean? At another, he attacks "tribalism " in Christianity. The tribalism that Hedges objects to is an essential part of all holy books themselves, as of the Bible and the Koran, the core documents of two major religions. Moses and Jesus were tribal leaders. "Tribal"and "faith" can mean different things to different people in the context of religion. Hedges uses the terms somewhat superficially.
The subject of his book is American Fascists and the Christian Right. However, one should be wary of relating Nazi Fascism to trends in contemporary America and the activism of religious and other groups. The Nazi movement was dedicated to uniting the people behind a common ideal. The powerful in America seek to maintain and enhance their control by fostering disunity, division and apathy among the majority. The role of Christian Right should be placed in broader perspective than Hedges seems to do..
here come the Fascists wrapped in the US flag.

Speaking of the US flag, i think i may have remembered something else i had learnt long ago that i need to check out & confirm once again (its been a while). But i just realised, i may have just said a bit too much already, better end here before someone starts calling me the fascist here.
Many of us are tired of or apathetic to Nazi and Hitler analogies. However, elements of psychoses and historical movements are likely worth considering - short of crossing the "extremist" line.
I've added this book to my wishlist.
This is a subject I like to keep a close eye upon. With most Westerners concerned by extremism in Islam, the extremism here at home is to often overlooked.
The "neocon dominionist Evangelicals" are recruiting, and they are targeting disenfranchised youth.
This is yet another screaming need for a wake-up call to the sleeping masses of Americans.
People like Ron Luce (see: Battlecry) are extremely dangerous to Democracy.
I am wary of any situation where fundamentalism is held above reason and pluralism.
For instance, men with nazi/fascists historical connections and whose philosophies have not changed since then, perhaps they could instead be the right candidates to qualify under those definition & not the ones with significant differences in ideology.
Yesterday these were the words of a Nazi/fascist:
"National Socialism will use its own revolution for the establishing of a new world order."--Adolph Hitler
http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0401/S00150.htm
Today, these are the words of a "respected president" representing a "free country"
"What is at stake is more than one small country, it is a big idea - a new world order, where diverse nations are drawn together in common cause to achieve the universal aspirations of mankind: peace and security, freedom, and the rule of law. Such is a world worthy of our struggle, and worthy of our children's future."---President George Bush State of the Union Address 1991
"Out of these troubled times, our fifth objective — a New World Order — can emerge: a new era" ---President Bush addressing a joint session of Congress

In regards to todays psuedo pastors many of whom clearly do not represent biblical values with their teaching, i dont consider them fascists but instead actually rich jesus salesmen(also i believe some are actually a little more than that based on certain other information) who do their bidding for them.
"You've got to kill the terrorists before the killing stops and I am for the President — chase them all over the world, if it takes ten years, blow them all away in the name of the Lord"---Jerry Lamon Falwell

"I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war, and I don't think any oil shipments will stop."--Pat Robertson on the 700 Club regarding hugo chavez
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_robertson#Hugo_Ch.C3.A1vez
You often hear people say "follow the money & see where it leads you".It is true & it does often work, it might perhaps explain why unexpectedly Jesus these days wants his president to assassinate his enemies or blow up terrorists in HIS NAME!!!
So what's the cause of all of this ultimately? The peuedo evangelicals/pastors/ministries??? No. How do these kind derive their power? We need to go higher up (no no not God!!! but) to the systems that exert influence on them(follow the money/power trail). The entire system is corrupt (& not just the church)& elements of these all across have been eaten away by the same virus.

Would it be a surprise then if the language out of the vatican sounded extremely familiar in comparison to that spoken by hitler or bush?

(I remember the new pope called for the same, the christmas after he was elected. Lost the link source)
yeah it appears they all seem to understand one another, must be the "unholy gift of unholy tongues"
So then since when has this been the philosophy of the church, how & when then did become this way, more importantly whose philosophies & intended objectives are these? Does everyone still find no problem with what has been happening in secret over all these years & decades (& even beyond that)or is it that no one can see where exactly we're heading despite it being told to us loud & clear? Should we keep in mind who the real fascist & nazis are despite our general & selective use of such words?
