I'm hoping to make some connections with other people out there like myself. I have non-arthritis related joint pain, or as one doctor has labled me, "Weather Sensitive Joint Pain".
My problems started at the age of four years old. It was summer time and my knee's hurt so bad. The pain was deep down "in the bone" burning pain. My first episode lasted for four days. I cried constantly, and would lay on our living room floor writhing my legs around but unwanting to stand or move.
This of course frightened my mother. She took me to the hospital. My legs were examined and X-Rayed. The diagnosis: "Growing Pains". These growing pains would come and go throughout my childhood. My poor mother spent many hours on the floor with me. She would take my knee with both her hands and rub it fast (creating friction) and the pain was ease... until she stopped, then it would come back with full intensity shortly afterward.
We expected these pains to slow down and stop as I got older. It made sense to my parents. I grew very fast as a child. By the age of 11 years old I was at my full height of 5'10". But 11 years old came and went and the pains continued with only one change....
It spread.
The only connection that has ever been made with my joint pain is weather changes. My family and friends rely on my joint pain more than the weather man. My pain will typically begin 3-4 days before an oncoming storm/rain/snow and will increase in intesity as the storm nears closer.
Now at the age of 31, all of my joints are effected (with exception of my toes). From my ankles to my shoulders I get this awful burning pain deep down in my joints.
Over the years I have gotten use to it, but I have also sought an answer to what this pain is. I've seen a few doctors, had tests, and can only be told it is not arthritis. No one can tell me what I want to know though... what is it? What causes this pain? The only explaination I've had is from one doctor who simply said, "You seem to be sensitive to weather changes."
This isn't acceptable to me. There has to be a reason for this. Most people do not walk around in dire pain, every time the weather changes, for no reason!
Cold makes the pain more intense. Heat and pain killers take it away.
I am seeking a common ground. Seekings others who may experience this problem. See if any one out there has been able to come up with an answer. It is important to me.
I have become use to this over the years. Sometimes it is very bad, very painful, to the point where it effects my ability to function normally. My fingers will be so painful that it is hard to move them, hard to type, and hard to grasp objects. There are days where heat and pain killers only slightly ease the intesitity of the pain, not take it away intirely.
This has become an important quest of knowledge for me because at the age of three years old, my eldest son developed the very same problem. I sware even one doctor tries to tell me it is growing pains, I'm going to kick that doctor in the knee and ask him/her if it is growing pains he/she is feeling!
Like myself my son's pain is directly related to weather changes. Sometimes his pain will come a day earlier than my own. He will wake in the middle of the night crying his heart out sometimes, sometimes it starts in the middle of the day, sometimes morning... just like myself.
I only can wish that no parent feels the heartache of your child crying in pain and not knowing an answer as to why.
If you have this "weather sensitivity" problem, I would love to hear from you!

I'm Cathy (and old enough to be your mom!) You NEED to go to a Rheumatologist!
Have them do bloodwork to check your ANA. It will show if you have an auto-immune problem.
You are NOT experiencing "Growing Pains"! ANY pain ESPECIALLY with one as young as you, is NOT normal.
Find a Specialist Referral phone number for your area. If you are near to a University with a Medical center such as MAYO CLINIC, SHANDS, ETC., they could help you the best!
PLEASE??????? Let me know the outcome! I'd love to help you, whether it be emotional or physical!
May God bless you and you are in my prayers!
Just remember one thing......KEEP SMILING!! I know it's hard, but your attitude WILL keep the stress levels down! I do relaxation breathing, it goes like this;
Smell the Roses; Take a slow deep breath though your nose.
Blow out the Candles; exhale SLOWLY with your lips like your blowing out a candle, push your lower abdomen out while doing this. Doing this a few times SLOWLY, will at least help calm you down!
Keep in Touch OK?
Sincerely,
Cathy
One Doctor that I tried out had me do some bending and stretching and told me that I was "too you and too flexible" to have arthritis. (This is the one that labeled me as just being weather sensitive).
Another Doctor I tried (under recommendation of my MIL) did take blood work, and tested for RA, Lupus, and Thyroid problems. All came back fine. After that, the doctor was clueless. He felt very positive that I did not have a form of arthritis.
So then my ex was diagnosed with arthritis in his knee. He was seeing a family/sports doctor. So I decided to give this guy a try.
I admit I liked this guy a lot more as he seemed to take me seriously. The other doctors never directly said anything but had an attitude that said to me they thought I must be lying or something because I was too young for something to be wrong.
This doctor didn't see the blood work report, but I told him what the other doctor had told me, that the (was it RF?) factor was negative. He suggested Fibromyalgia. I never did do any testing for that though because while the joint pain sounds similar, it really doesn't describe me.
I don't have pain in the spots that they test for, my pain is related only to weather changes and only my joints. My joints don't seem to experience any swelling either... at least not visibly.
It's very frustrating to be told over and over and over again that there is nothing wrong with you! I avoid thinking about it most of the times because I hate crying and the frustration will bring me to tears.
I guess before I had children, I might have started to think that maybe there really was nothing wrong with me. Maybe I was "just sensitive to weather changes", but if there is nothing wrong with me, then I'd like some doctor to explain how it is hereditary!
Until quinine was put behind the counter I would take that - now my dr has given me a stronger perscription for this and migranes.
I have never noticed that it was due to weather - but maybe i should journal and write down all the physical activity of that day and then the weather and see if there is a pattern. Thanks for making me think further about this :)
I have similar problems--pain (aggravated by changes in weather) but no RA, no sensitive points associated with Fibromyalgia.
I still have them, and it has spread just like yours. Sometimes it feels like it's IN the bones - which they didn't understand me saying either. I was diagnosed with Arthralgia from a Rheumatologist, and it turns out now that I have Crohn's Disease this particular Arthralgia is very common. There's no swelling or 'heating' up of the affected spot like you would find in arthritis, but the pain is very real. When I went to Physical Therapy for it they thought it sounded like Tendinitis, and over the years other doctors agreed that I definitely had some tendinitis although that didn't account for all the pain in all the affected areas.
Like you, the weather plays a big role in it. Sometimes I take baths to help, but I also massage the areas that hurt and do small 'vibrations' until it eases up enough. I still take medicine if it gets too bad - which is most of the time. I like to think I have a very high tolerance for pain, but my 'leg aches' and when it goes into my arms and hands, it's just ridiculous. It's so bad I break down and cry like a baby. I call my Mom when it gets really bad - she's a comfort since she was there for me throughout my childhood whenever I had it pop up. And it's always worse at night and in the early morning.
That sounds 100% like me (the joint pain, not the Crohn's Disease).
How about cold.. When your joints are hurting, does cold make it worse?
I know direct heat helps a lot. Because of this, I've always figured that the reason vibration etc helps is because it causes friction on the skin and warms the skin up which gives the joint some heat relief.
I really hope and pray to someday be able to get to see a specialist and find out an answer to this. So far only one of my five children seemed to have inherited this from me, but two of my children are young enough to not know for sure yet if they'll have a problem... My middle son will be turning 7 years old at the end of October, and so I think we're in the clear with him.
But, my problem with using bath/shower water to help my pain is that as soon as I'm out of the water, my skin is now heated up, and the air is cooler. That cool air hit me and depending on how hot the water was, it usually doesn't take very long before I'm hurting again, and sometimes hurting even more than I was before the bath/shower.
Lately I have found a bit of relief with the roll on pepper cream. At first the heat was so intense I had to wash it off, but with use it does get better.
I don't know exactly what causes the pain, I just know that the weather, specifically barometric pressure, seems to affect my joints.
I had this checked out by a doc about a year ago, as my hip was so painful I could barely walk. X-rays and an MRI showed flawless anatomy, no arthritis, no labral tear... nothing abnormal at all. He told me I had some of the healthiest looking hips he'd seen in a while. I kind of wanted to hit him, but I just kind of gave up at that point.
I'm also hypermobile (double jointed) and I think that also has something to do with it. I'm only 25, so I just try to deal with it. Naproxin helps.
I have this pain everywhere! Jaw, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, spine, fingers, hips, knees, ankles, and toes. I am 18 years old and I do not have arthritis either. I have been though nights where I am in so much pain that I want medication but can not get out of bed to get it. I want to see a specialist soon but I feel like I will just have more unanswered questions.
Alot of people seem to go through this. I was told i had fybromyalgia when I was 12 but for muscular pain (which I don't get anymore). I get so fusterated! I stay away from Naproxin because it puts holes in the lining of your stomach.
I also now will have arthritis in my heel for the rest of my life because I shattered it into 5 pieces and the cartlige will never be the same. The painkillers do not help. I want to know what it is!
my name is eileen have horrible pain in all of my joints been told no arthritis the pain is so bad also had very bad growing pains when i was young i have a bad back and two operations later have extreme pain in lower back and down left leg 7/24 now my joints are really bad dont know what to do my heart goes out to you hope we find help soon!
I have finally found a doctor who could give a name to my joint pain. My experience has been much like yours. Try looking up Palindromic rheumatism. It may help you find some relief.
Good luck and God Bless.
