Donating to the library, book swapping, yard sales, and selling on Amazon come to top of mind, but I'd love to know what else is out there.

Honestly I usually keep all my books. The ones I didn't care for, or that are banged up, I'll usually donate somewhere.
LOL at never letting them go and using them for furniture- I love that! I've held onto so many that I really do need to find a home for some, though I will miss those footrests ;-)
