Besides providing the functional support that a retaining wall provides, modular retaining walls are pretty darn cool to look at. So what is it that makes a modular retaining wall different than other forms of retaining walls?
Modular retaining walls follow a unique design. These retaining walls (made of concrete) are designed in an interlocking method as opposed to the more linear design of other types of retaining walls.
Probably the structure modular retaining walls are most evocative of are the old castles of Europe's middle ages. As such, the presence of this type of retaining wall really adds to the visual allure of a home or piece of property. It certainly won't detract from it! This very appealing look has allowed the popularity of modular retaining walls to experience exponential growth in recent years. Perhaps that growth will continue to grow for decades.
There is a concern, however, with the weather when building modular retaining walls.
Heat and cold can effect the concrete composition of a modular retaining wall more than it can affect retaining walls made of different materials. Although granted, variations in heat and cold will have some effect on wood, stone retaining walls as well. Primarily, modular retaining walls must allow water to run off or drain off its structure or changes in temperature will lead to the water causing cracks. This, however, will not be an issue if the individual building the modular retaining walls builds the wall properly. And most builders of these walls are skilled enough to know the proper way to construct the walls.
A modular design to a concrete retaining wall is definitely a design one should consider when mulling over the type of retaining wall one should have constructed. If one likes the very cool, Gothic look of Europe, a modular wall may prove quite aesthetically pleasing.
