Flying Bears!

My favorite childhood memory of my Dad comes from vacations in Prudenville, Michigan, at my Great Aunt Alice’s home. Many nights we would gather at the garbage dump in hopes of seeing bears. All we ever saw was birds, lots of birds. My Dad would always say, “Nothing but flying bears, let’s go home.” Please know that I was only around five to seven years old and my Dad knew everything and when he said flying bears, I saw in my minds eye, flying bears! I didn’t figure it out till I was older. Anyway, one Christmas I was out shopping with my husband and a big smile came to my face. I just stood looking up at all these bears with big beautiful wings and saying I can’t believe I finally found one. Well, my husband wanted to know what I was talking about and I told him my childhood story. Well, we just had to buy the bear for Dad and one, of course, for ourselves. We went over to my Mom and Dad’s house and hung up the bear on a hook from the ceiling, with me smiling from ear to ear the whole time. I turned around and looked at my Dad and said, “Dad, I finally found a flying bear!” He laughed and said he never even thought that I took it literally about the bears. We all had such a big laugh and fun reminiscing about that time so long ago. It’s even more special to me now that my Dad has dementia. He doesn’t remember a lot, but I’m sure going to go over there and remind him on Father’s Day! I love my Dad, he’s my hero!
