I came across this recipe while leafing through mom's magazines over the holidays. Unfortunately, I can't remember which one it was. The original recipe calls for Russian dressing, but none of us likes it. The spices give the burger fantastic flavor, but I didnt' tell Cal what any of them were. He may not have eaten it.
I have many recipes for coleslaw, but I used my favorite one for topping the burgers. Measurements are approximate.
1 1/4 lbs ground beef
2 t paprika
2 teaspoons coriander
1 1/2 teaspoons ginger
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon cayenne (optional)
1 t garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons pepper
swiss cheese
sliced and toasted rye bread
My Favorite Coleslaw
Preheat grill to medium heat.
In a small bowl, combine spices and sugar and mix well. Mix with beef in a large bowl til well mixed (being careful not to overwork meat). Shape burgers into four patties.
Cook burgers about 10 minutes per side for well done. Top with swiss cheese during the last minute or so, or til cheese is melted.
Serve burgers on toasted rye. Matt and I topped ours with coleslaw, but Cal had his plain. Served with baked curly fries.
My Favorite Coleslaw
1 bag pre-made shredded coleslaw mix
1 cup mayo
1 t apple cider vinegar
1 T celery seed
salt and pepper to taste
sugar to taste
Mix mayo through sugar. Toss with shredded slaw mix. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour.
