What is it with these people coming across the border illegally? They want to enter the United States of America. But why do so without bothering to go through the proper process to do so?
One thing is certain; they demonstrate a lot of fortitude. After all, they're willing to undergo hardships crossing the Arizona desert, on foot, in scorching temperatures. They're willing to pay a "coyote" thousands of dollars.
It's not like the United States is closed to immigration. Not at all. The influx of legal immigrants since 2000 is estimated to be around 4 million.
Yet, these people persist in doing it the hard way. Or, at least this appears to be the hard way. Surely, the legal process is easier; it has to be.
A recent news story depicted the willingness of adults to leave their children in Mexico while crossing the border without them. The scheme apparently involves hiring a stranger to care for the kids, and then later pretend to be a close relative when bringing them across the border into the United States.
Now, what kind of parent would be willing to do this? Shouldn't they be concerned about their children's safety? Aren't they concerned that they might never see their kids again? It's unbelievable that someone would put his or her son or daughter at this kind of risk.
There must be some kind of compelling reason to cross the border illegally. Once they're in the United States, they tend to be forced into long tedious hours with little pay and live in substandard conditions. Is it really so bad south of the border that this kind of life is so much better?
If that were the case, then Vicente Fox should be doing something about it.
So, what is the compelling force behind this? Whatever it is, it must be very strong!

Look around you. In your very own states, hunger and poverty exists on every level. And yet, our government insists on sending CARE packages to everyone in the freaking world. Hey, wake up America, we have a vote in this. We can change the world, and we must act before its too late. All this rhetoric is all fine and good and just talk. But actions speak louder than words. Sorry Jeff, I couldn't help myself, got started on this tirade. Have a nice day my friend.
That is what burns my butt! When will we ever start worrying about our own people instead of trying to save the world?
And probably the real reason that they don't want to come here legally. Mexico is and always will be "their home", just like the United States is ours - and they're perfectly OK with taking our money every year back to Mexico so that they can live one heck of a better life than any of us here do.
Make friends with a few illegals and let them talk - they'll tell you that they don't want to live here permantly and they might even tell you how nice their big house is in Mexico, while OUR OWN people here are homeless and working at jobs that can't support us here.
I have felt only suspicion with illegal immigrants climbing the walls and swimming the stream of water during the silent hours of the night to get into this country (quite sneaky, in my view) and I wonder, What is it they are struggling to hide from us?
It is enough that more than a handful of illegal immigrants in this country are in prison, a bundle (the ones who sneak in) has babies and then jump on the welfare system wagon, and the others (only God knows what they're doing) but I have to believe that a few means to do well, they are simply ignorant on how to go about doing things right - like stepping forwarding, go through the documentation process and take it from there.
My great-grandparents did not climb walls or stream through some creek through the silent hours of the night when they arrived here after the Spanish Civil War. Everyone was documented.
If you are Illegal, you are a Criminal. This country would be much improved if they were gone. Perhaps we can adopt the plan France is sketching out now, pay them to get out.
Also, I very much agree with Marilyn N. I'm all the way with her truth too.
